Special Teams are a Major Problem
I am not a panic type but I want to see improvement each week. After the Pitt game that was not hard and I was happy with the offense. The defense needs time. New faces everywhere. Secondary needs more time to develope a style with 2 new starters and 1 rookie, Harper coming of injury. M&M is the only real returning starter. Thomas is in limbo till Davis gets comfortable. Way to much money for him to be a nickle back.
Now the ST unit is a group that should develope pretty fast. Staying in your lane is not a hard thing to learn. Blocking in the return is basic also. Ok they need to shuffle the units personel around a bit, but still come on, they are giving teams 60 qnd 70 yard fields and we are starting inside the 10. That was the story last year and it is repeating itself. I do not care how good your offense is that will give you 2 to 3 losses a year. Now we know why we need a kicker that can kick it deep. We can not tackle the returner with the first 4 players down field. Punt coverage is also a concern. I would rather have a punt 10 yards shorter, with a longer hang time, forcing a fair catch than a season average of 15+ yards by the Opp. return team. I have not desided on who really to blame for the bocked field goal yet. Still torn between good D play or poor ST play. As an old timer I learned the importance of Special Teams play years ago. For many years that was all we had here. Back then teams would comment on how knowledgable we were as fans concerning the special teams play. They were kind not to say that was the only think we had. This is our achillies heel right now. Not so much the secondary. This can be fixed. |

Re: Special Teams are a Major Problem
i still think our biggest problem whether it be special teams or defense is a killer instinct. we need someone who will knock the snot out of you then get in your face telling them he will do it again

I'm not to woeeied about the special teams. Coach Bonamego(or however you spell it) will get them right. To watch this coach in practice is unreal. He's a hell raiser and workhorse. He'll get er done.
