Payton's Stunts
ESPN Page 2 - The Sports Guy: NFL Power Poll
29. New Orleans A reader from Brooklyn named Eric asks, "Did you watch Peter King's Saints feature on 'Inside the NFL' this week? I feel like I gained incredible insight into the Saints' chances this week against Carolina. To start with, Sean Payton staged a mock funeral for their 2006 year, complete with a priest (not to mention Drew Brees also was symbolically buried -- in a city that still believes in voodoo, is this something you want to do to your quarterback?), and King tells us later that for this week's practice, Payton brought out a wagon and filled it with empty chairs. The message was meant to be that no one is on the Saints bandwagon anymore. Something about these blatant symbolic motivational techniques unnerved me. And then I realized the problem: Sean Payton is a sorority girl trapped in a coach's body. I might have lost enough confidence to even take David Carr on the road." (Eric, I wouldn't go THAT far, but I agree with your Payton analogy -- he's one more blowout loss away from inviting his players over for a slumber party and making each of them mix tapes. Maybe he needs to embrace Doc Rivers' philosophy of ubuntu.) This isn't a power rankings post, so don't blast me yet (euph). This is another example of theatrics from Payton. I've been very leary of blasting the coach thus far, I coach youth football so I have some - allbeit minute - inkling as to what these guys go thru. However, this bandwagon thing and the funeral are a little much. I appreciate the sentiment; coach is trying to show these guys that they can only count on themselves, but in the words of GOB Bluth, "come on!" These are grown-ass men. They don't need a dog and pony show to get their attention. Get in these guys faces, coach. Start benching guys (I'm looking at you Simoneau, Shanle, Nesbit, Faine, Stinch, Bellamy, David, Harper, Smith, Grant, Thomas, Brees, Bush, etc...) even if the backups suck. Send a message, don't put on a play. I appologize for the rant, but Payton needs to quit this Mickey Mouse crap of running three reverses a game, going deep on FOURTH AND FRAKING ONE and start playing some real f'n football. This is not Madden 08. You're toying with my emotions here. Sorry, I'm done. |

Re: Payton's Stunts
If we were winning (like last year) Payton would be heralded as a Genius (like last year) and all you fools would be pulling wagons out in front of your youth teams and burying your Pop Warner trophies.....
This is the NFL for God's sake. Winning aint easy. Especially for basically a sophomore team/coaching staff. What will you say if we rip off 3 in a row?? |

Re: Payton's Stunts
3 in a row? how about 13 in a row? look at that schedule! It is easily possible. Of course the team will actually have to give an effort each week.

Sure everyone would be happy with Payton if he were 3-0 and I would be starting DT for the Packers if I were a lot bigger, faster, stronger and better at football. If he reels off three in a row I will say that it is a good start, that's he's making the right adjustments, and that he needs to keep making adjustments and keeping the the team focused. I still won't be happy with a 3-3 record. |

Re: Payton's Stunts
I have a real problem with this post. I can understand how you'd think that a wagon full of empty chairs is childish. It is also true that these are, as you put it , grown assed men. Where my problem comes in is how do you figure that yelling and screaming at them isn't just as childish? It's just opposite ends of the spectrum. So far nothing has worked to get these guys motivated. I'm sure that Payton has threatened every last one of them with their job. I got the chance to see him in all his, pardon the expression, pissed off splendor. Screaming and yelling and threatening won't do a thing.
These are grown assed men, they'll play hard when they play hard. As bad as I hate to say that, it's the truth. |

We 'rip off' 3 wins in a ROW there still doesn't deserve to have everyone back on the bandwagon of going to the SB. You'd be playing .500 ball hardly a record of a champion. The mere fact we have lost 4 in a row should indicate to everyone this team is not good and has some serious problems that FINALLY need address from years ago. Anyone got a power ranking on paper... I am on the toliet and I need to wipe myself. |
