Matt McCoy - 2005 NFL Draft Prospects
Matt McCoy OLB San Diego St. 6’ 234 Eagles have him at 5-11, 230 Year:2005 Round:2 Pick:31, Eagles Over the past two seasons, there may not have been a better linebacker duo in the country than what the Aztecs lined up with. Matt McCoy outside with Kirk Morrison inside was the heart of the San Diego St. defense. After starting 8 games as a freshman, McCoy had a huge sophomore season. He finished the year with 125 tackles, 13 for loss, with 4 sacks. He led the MWC in tacklers per game that season. As a junior his numbers dipped a little, but he was still very active and productive. He had 90 tackles, 9.5 for loss, and 3 sacks. McCoy has virtually every trait you want in a linebacker. He has that ultimate linebacker mentality, playing with a nasty streak on the field and being as tough as they come. He won’t back down from anyone. He displays good athleticism, and the speed to close on the ball. He has great instincts and always around the play, whether dropping back or attacking the line of scrimmage. At barely 6’ tall, McCoy is a little short for linebacker in the NFL. His 230lb. frame will only allow him to play weakside at the next level. He could use to get a little stronger as he can be taken out of plays by blockers when moving towards the line of scrimmage. McCoy is a solid weak side linebacker prospect, and should be a special teams demon at the next level. His lack of great size will hurt him come draft day. McCoy was a surprise early entry candidate this year, and probably should have returned to school. With Kirk Morrison moving on, he would have been the unquestioned leader of that defense, and that could have helped him a lot in terms of his draft position. As it stands right now, McCoy looks like an early day two prospect that could surprise down the line. The final Stunt: Eagles defensive end Juqua Thomas and former linebacker Matt McCoy were each fined $7,500. McCoy will be liable for the fine, a league spokesman said, even though the Eagles released him Monday afternoon. Philadelphia free safety Quintin Mikell and Minnesota middle linebacker E.J. Henderson were penalized $5,000 apiece. The fine against McCoy was also for a third-quarter play on which made a late hit on Vikings' punter Chris Kluwe. The infraction drew a 15-yard unnecessary roughness flag and a rebuke from teammates and coaches when McCoy returned to the Philadelphia sideline. A second-round pick in the 2005 draft, McCoy was waived the next day. The Philadelphia Eagles on Monday afternoon waived former second-round draft choice Matt McCoy, a one-time starter at weakside linebacker, ending a mostly disappointing three-year tenure with the team. The release of McCoy, who might draw some interest from other teams on the waiver wire because of his youth and potential, came just one day after he was flagged for a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty in the third quarter of Sunday's victory over the Minnesota Vikings. The call came on a late hit against Minnesota punter Chris Kluwe during a return. McCoy, 25, was rebuked by teammates and coaches on the Philadelphia sideline. The move:$$$$$ Philadelphia elevated rookie linebacker Akeem Jordan, an undrafted college free agent from James Madison, from the practice squad to the active roster. Jordan had earned a spot on the practice squad with a standout training camp, excelling on special teams, and he is expected to be used on the kick coverage units. A former San Diego State star, McCoy rose rapidly up many NFL teams' prospect lists in the final month preceding the 2005 draft. A series of excellent auditions for scouts, during which McCoy displayed terrific athletic skills, including a 4.58-second time in the 40-yard dash, skyrocketed his draft stock. The Eagles chose McCoy with the 63rd overall selection and signed him to a five-year, $3.18 million contract that included a signing bonus of $1.25 million. But during his rookie season, McCoy struggled to assimilate the complicated scheme of coordinator Jim Johnson and he played sparingly. He came back to win the No. 1 weakside job in 2006, starting 10 games and notching 81 tackles and two sacks, but he suffered a November shoulder injury and lost his job. This season, with the Eagles having revamped their linebacker corps, McCoy never really threatened for a starting spot and played mostly on special teams. In 26 career appearances, McCoy has 91 tackles, two sacks, three forced fumbles and three passes defensed. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3086040 I like the guy already. Nice waiver move. The price is right. com-on-down. God knows young legs are need on defense. Nice special teams addition. Let this be a lesson to you all. Be weary of combine heroes. |

Saints sign LB Matt McCoy; place Alfred Fincher on IR
by Dave Lawrence, NewOrleansSaints.com Sunday, November 04, 2007 - 10:00 AM Prior to Sunday’s game against Jacksonville, the New Orleans Saints placed linebacker Alfred Fincher on injured reserve and in his place signed free agent linebacker Matt McCoy. Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced the roster moves. McCoy is a 5-11, 230-pound linebacker from San Diego State who is in his third NFL season. A former second-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2005, McCoy has played in 26 regular season games with 10 starts and recorded 85 tackles with a pair of sacks and forced three fumbles. In addition, he has also made 34 tackles on special teams. The Tustin, Calif. native played in each of the Eagles’ seven games this season and recorded a team-best 10 special teams stops prior to being released by the NFC East club last Monday. McCoy will wear #59 for the Black and Gold. Fincher, also a third-year linebacker, has played in 24 games since being drafted by the Saints in the third round in 2005 and has made 21 tackles on special teams. Playing in all seven games for the Saints this season, Fincher left last Sunday’s victory over San Francisco after sustaining a concussion as he made a tackle in kick coverage. Re: Saints sign Matt McCoy LB
I wonder if this has more to do with Fincher than it does McCoy? Maybe it was a pretty serious concussion. I hope not.
I suppose that I'll never know and I'm sure that we wont know what this kid can do until next preseason. |

This is a temporary solution. Given the Eagles' dismal defensive performance this season, I'm not surprised they made a goat out of this guy. Fincher being done and having little quality bench depth anyway, McCoy doesn't cost the team much in either $ or decrease in talent. The fact he's started in a (overly) complicated defensive scheme, he's young and injury free makes him almost too good to be true.
McCoy is wondering who's his guardian angel, going from a team that is imploding ugly to a team that has a decent shot not only at the playoffs but for the Super Bowl. |

Heck the kid can come play on special teams and be a third stringer. As long as it is an upgrade somewhere. I just like the move because the saints are going outside of there system. A second round pick for cheap. I will take it all day. He was not a bust really as much as a player that could not live up to his salary. Now that money is not the issue lets see what we got. Cap casualty.
