Jim Henderson Report
players have caught my eye in camp
07/30/2003 Jim Henderson / WWL-TV Sports Director There are three guys that I have found really impressive in my visits to practice so far – Donte Stallworth, Derrick Rodgers and Dale Carter. Stallworth seems much more mature this year. He’s really grown up and gotten the pro mentality. He’s caught everything, including making some circus catches and he seems to be much more flexible. Carter seems to genuinely be enjoying his first training camp in years. He really looks like the guy they thought they were getting last year. He’s quick and he’s draped all over the receivers. Rodgers still has a lot left in him. He’s playing well in a position at which they weren’t very strong and he could jump right in if James Allen is not yet ready for that spot. The least impressive guy I’ve seen out of the draft picks has been receiver Talman Gardner. He’s dropped several passes all the way back to the minicamps. Sullivan’s holdout wasn't a concern If it had lasted past this coming Monday it might have though. A holdout is not that unusual for a top draft pick and defensive tackle is a spot that you can learn quickly. Deuce McAllister came into camp on Black and Gold Day and Donte Stallworth missed a few days last year, but if Sullivan’s holdout had gone past Monday, there would have been some concern about his ability to contribute this year. Bouman will be a pleasant surprise I think fans will be delighted with Todd Bouman’s arm strength. He can flat out throw it a mile. It seems the Saints have made a pretty good deal in getting Bouman to replace Delhomme. Physically, he’s better than Jake.
