anyone know our cap status right now?
An updated cap figure would be very interesting indeed. What is of interest with the #s posted above is that the Saints were at that time 5th in the league in available $$$ whereas the Panthers at 25th, the Bucs at 29th, and the Falcons at 31st, all were near the bottom with little room to maneuver. When it is time to pair down to the final 53 roster there will be a few quality players that will become available and we may be in a postition to pick up someone off the wire or make a last minute trade prior to the cut. If not, it would be wise for the Saints to re-work the contract of players like Darren Howard or Michael Lewis to tie them up long term. Our foes will have trouble with any of the above options with the cap room they have to work with unless they release a high profile player they now have under contract.
As far as future years, the Saints have already tied up most of their starters to long term deals. The Bucs on the other hand, will have to figure out a way to keep theirs. There has been a lot said of how they can keep McFarland and Sapp & Co. happy with new deals. The Saints front office the past few years has done an excellent job rebuilding the team through the draft, trades, and free agency. We now have a talented young group of players on our team, under contracts that will keep the core group intact for several years to come. We are better shape than are most teams. |
