Realistic look at offseason. Opinions on free agents, ect..
With the season coming to a close, and the disappointment of our defense and special teams, I would like to take a serious look at possible resign’s, free agents, and maybe even trades.
Here is my list of Restricted and Unrestricted free agents that I think will be resigned and released. Copper, Terrance - WR - Gone Faine, Jeff - C - Resigned Gleason, Steve - S - Gone Goodwin, Jonathan - OG - Resigned Henderson, Devery - WR - Gone Johnson, Eric - TE - Gone Joseph, Keith - RB - Gone Martin, Jamie - QB - Gone Miller, Billy - TE - Resigned Nesbit, Jamar - OG - Resigned Patten, David - WR - Resigned Schurman, Nate - FB - Gone Stecker, Aaron - RB - Resigned Thomas, Fred - CB - Gone Wynn, Renaldo - DE - Gone Young, Brian - DT - Resigned I think Faine stays, but I hope Goodwin can beat him out in training camp. Eric Johnson was a big disappointment and I believe Billy Miller is playing good football and would like to see him take over next season. Other possible releases or restructures could include… 1. Deuce McAllister Stays - Restructures (Being he has had multiple knee injury’s in three seasons, the Saints have a little bit of an upper hand to make him restructure.) 2. Mike McKenzie stays, but will be out for some portion of next season. 3. Jason David - Cut (I dk if they would actually cut him, but he is no good to us and being that his contract was front loaded we shouldn’t take to much of a cap hit if he were let go.) 4. Mark Simoneau - Cut 5. Olindo Mare - Cut Possible free agent acquisitions at some key positions. 1. Jerry Porter - WR (a solid #2 receiver that could really help out) 2. Andre’ Davis - WR/KR (could take over for Henderson and also boost up our kick and punt return) 3. Patrick Crayton - WR (another solid #2 receiver that could really help out) 4. Albert Haynesworth - DT (a run stuffer that could plug up the middle and may not break bank) 5. Mike Rucker - DT (a cheaper but older Haynesworth) 6. Karlos Danby - LB (solid and probably better all around player than Briggs. Also cheaper) 7. Domonique Foxworth - CB (I believe could be a starter on any team that didn’t have Bly and Baily) 8. Drayton Florence - CB (Solid and definite upgrade to our secondary) 9. Marcus Trufant - CB (Could take over the #1 corner spot while McKenzie heals) 10. Nnamdi Asomugha - CB (Same as above) Dre Bly - might be released from Bronco’s due to his large cap hit, if so also a possibility Draft Defense and go for the best kicker in the 4th or 5th round. Gary Gibbs must go. Possible Trades 1. DeAngello Hall - CB (a playmaker that we need. Overrated at times, but a definite upgrade.) 2. Jonathon Vilma - LB (A perfect fit in our 4-3 defense, and a not so good fit in the Jets 3-4 defense.) Asante Samuels will be to expensive for us. Lance Briggs will also be to expensive and underachieved this year I also believe we lock up Marquees Colston to a long term contract extention this year and save the hastle of other teams trying to steal him. I do not belive we give Will Smith his contract this offseason, but make him play out his last year and depending on how he produces take it from there with a possible Franchise tag being placed. That is my realistic look at the offseason, let me know what you think and if what changes or "realistic" additions yall would like to see happen come offseason. |

I think Gibbs will be here as long as Payton is.

Nice little write up and I agree with a majority of it. I do believe as mentioned above, Gibbs will be here as long as Payton is too.

We need to sure up that secondary first! Then let's get another receiver, then a linebacker.

Well, Patrick Crayton is off the market now.
FOX Sports on MSN - NFL - Crayton signs 4-year, $16M deal with Dallas Pretty much can forget Karlos Dansby too... http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3170392 |

Re: Realistic look at offseason. Opinions on free agents, ect..
LB will have to be through the draft unless the saints decide to pull a drew move and invest in a defensive leader for the club. I do not see that type of defensive player out there. Sorry. I am not sold on Briggs to be that type of player. He is good but captain of the D?
CB is needed still. I am looking at more of high mid talented CB that are young. CB Nnamdi Asomugha is the target I want or CB Drayton Florence. Not a #1 but very cap friendly compared to some of the contracts signed last year. Still drafting one to boot. |
