Re: Saints sign Gay!
Appears so.
Another system CB, Gay is physical, but how well will he play man coverage? We can't be changing our defensive scheme, can we? If that's the case, we need to take a hard look some safeties, either in the draft or free agency. |

No we aren't changing our system we are taking another huge risk. But if Gay doesn't work out next year we will have the CB'S to switch to a cover 2.

Re: Saints sign Gay!
i think was a good move by our FO.. gay is a much better man to man corner then david and in NE they played mostly zone which didnt play to his strengths.. he does have a tendency to take chances and that sometimes gets him into trouble but that can always be expected from any corner...

Re: Saints sign Gay!
At this point I think we should Draft Rivers 1 and Kenny Phillips 2 and switch to a cover 2 system, which is designed to not give up the big play. What was our problem last year? Giving up the big play. With more athletic LB's like Rivers, Vilma, and Fujita and a very athletic FS like Kenny Phillips we could have mediocre CB's and still be fine.
I really think it's time for a scheme change. If you don't have shutdown CB's then you just don't play man to man. It's the same reason teams without big centers play zone in basketball. You use the sceme that best fits your personnel. |

Re: Saints sign Gay!
I don't know how you guys feel about sabermetrics, but this guy is basically doing a football version of it and he says...
Brandon (D.C.): Am I crazy to think that Randall Gay will end up being the better deal coming out of the New England defensive backfield? SportsNation KC Joyner: You are not crazy. Gay had a 5.7 YPA last year if memory serves me correct. I am betting that is one of the reasons NE isn't making much of play for Samuel. They know if they keep Gay they will be in just about as good as shape at the starting spot and only need to find a nickel CB. |

Re: Saints sign Gay!
One thing I really like about Gay is that you know you're going to get 110% from him day in day out. This is a guy who went undrafted and worked his way up becoming a starter on a Superbowl team. Even after his success, you never heard anything about him clamoring for a new contract. He played out his deal and earned himself a nice pay day... good for him. Hopefully he'll make an impact on our poor secondary.
