Saints sign Gay!
GAY GOES SOUTH
After two frenetic days of free agency, Sunday was shaping up to be a lot slower. So much for that. The Patriots have lost cornerback Randall Gay to New Orleans, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network. Gay has agreed to terms on a four-year, $17.8 million deal, which includes a $3.75 million signing bonus and $6.9 million in guaranteed money. It's not a jaw-dropping deal, but it further damages the defending AFC champions. And Gay figures to be an improvement over Jason David, who performed like a piece of French (Quarter) Toast for the New Orleans Saints in 2007. |
Re: Saints sign Gay!
So does anyone have opinions on Gay?
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
I know most think he is only a nickel guy, but I like it myself. I think it was still a little bit pricey.. but he filled out nicely as a starter for NE in my opinion..
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
I think he is a role player...best case scenario, he is a nickle or hopefully dime guy...worst case scenario, we need him to start for us.
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
draftdaddy.com ranks all the FAs and they have Gay as #7 for the cb. I'm happy with that. This is a good signing to address a real need on this team. Some people will be upset about another mid-teir player. Oh well.

Re: Saints sign Gay!
I've been quiet for the most part about Randall Gay. He was a solid player in Belichek's system in New England. I think he is a bit underrated, but that remains to be seen. I honestly think Gay will be penciled in as a starter next season. I look forward to seeing what he can do for this secondary.
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
I like this. The Saints really been getting the Louisiana boys this offseason.. He is good enough.
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
I figured it would be for Jason David type money. I'm glad we didn't go overboard and overpay for him out of desparation.
As for my opinion on him, I think he's a pefect nickel back though he'll be our number 2 corner... but I'll take him over David any day. Jason David is better suited for a backup role where I think he'll be a contributor guarding teams 3rd and 4th receivers. |

Re: Saints sign Gay!
Look at it this way at least David won't be the starter!

Re: Saints sign Gay!
I love the signing and I was hoping that we would sign Samuel and Gay that way we could address MLB and DT with the #1 and #2 picks in the draft.
#1 Rivers, #2 Moore or Laws and Lee CB in the 3rd. |

Re: Saints sign Gay!
I think well will bring someone else in via trade or draft and David won't be a starter at least for a while. Until we can get our front 7 settled. We need a pass rush and an OLB and I assume you thinkDavid will still be a starter?
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
Helps out in a need area for sure. Not the flashiest signing but a solid one. Now if we could land a #1 like Lito or DHall in a trade then our secondary improves dramatically.

I for one am pretty excited about this signing. Gay is still young, but has played on a Super Bowl team for the last few years. IMO, that gives him more maturity automatically than most guys his age. It also means he's been getting very good instruction on how to play the position from arguably the best coaching staff in the NFL. He might not be a primetime player, but I definitely think he's what we need - some youth, but also a little bit of experience. I can definitely see him playing the #2 corner spot, at least until MM gets healthy. Also, he was playing behind Asante Samuel and Ellis Hobbs, two very good corners, so I don't think that just because he was the nickel back in New England means that he can't be a starter here. I mean, besides MM, our corners probably wouldn't even make another team. This is great news. |

Re: Saints sign Gay!
Not to impressed with this signing. We don't improve??? We need a pass rush. All they done with this signing is shut fans up who think the problem is the CB's. I think there is more concern with the S and FS spots.

Re: Saints sign Gay!
say welcome home to Randall !!! go out there do us proud. i like the move great news for the New Orleans Saints.
I hope we go 1. Rivers 2. Cromartie if we can get him in the second. ( anything can happen ) |

Re: Saints sign Gay!
So it's actually more than Jason David money?
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
Appears so.
Another system CB, Gay is physical, but how well will he play man coverage? We can't be changing our defensive scheme, can we? If that's the case, we need to take a hard look some safeties, either in the draft or free agency. |
Re: Saints sign Gay!
No we aren't changing our system we are taking another huge risk. But if Gay doesn't work out next year we will have the CB'S to switch to a cover 2.

Re: Saints sign Gay!
i think was a good move by our FO.. gay is a much better man to man corner then david and in NE they played mostly zone which didnt play to his strengths.. he does have a tendency to take chances and that sometimes gets him into trouble but that can always be expected from any corner...
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
I didn't like him in LSU and I didn't think he would transfer well to the NFL. I hope our system is the system for him. To me he is a David type CB who gets burnt deep ALOT@!
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
At this point I think we should Draft Rivers 1 and Kenny Phillips 2 and switch to a cover 2 system, which is designed to not give up the big play. What was our problem last year? Giving up the big play. With more athletic LB's like Rivers, Vilma, and Fujita and a very athletic FS like Kenny Phillips we could have mediocre CB's and still be fine.
I really think it's time for a scheme change. If you don't have shutdown CB's then you just don't play man to man. It's the same reason teams without big centers play zone in basketball. You use the sceme that best fits your personnel. |
Re: Saints sign Gay!
I don't know how you guys feel about sabermetrics, but this guy is basically doing a football version of it and he says...
Brandon (D.C.): Am I crazy to think that Randall Gay will end up being the better deal coming out of the New England defensive backfield? SportsNation KC Joyner: You are not crazy. Gay had a 5.7 YPA last year if memory serves me correct. I am betting that is one of the reasons NE isn't making much of play for Samuel. They know if they keep Gay they will be in just about as good as shape at the starting spot and only need to find a nickel CB. |
Re: Saints sign Gay!
One thing I really like about Gay is that you know you're going to get 110% from him day in day out. This is a guy who went undrafted and worked his way up becoming a starter on a Superbowl team. Even after his success, you never heard anything about him clamoring for a new contract. He played out his deal and earned himself a nice pay day... good for him. Hopefully he'll make an impact on our poor secondary.
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
Ive only seen him play a few times. Never really set my eyes just on him and watched his every move. I just know that anything is better than burnt toast.
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
KC Joyner with ESPN loves this guy, so we'll see...

Re: Saints sign Gay!
So now we have a nickel(Gay) and dime(David), still waiting on a starter! Not trying to be negative, just realistic. I think Gay will do well as a nickel and so-so if he has to start.
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
randall may have cost more money than david but at least not a fourth round draft pick as well
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
how tall is gay?...not another "little person" is he?
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
do you guys realize that maybe next year who our cb's will be??? i can hear the dome chanting already "YOUNG AND GAY" YOUNG AND GAY!!" thAT would be too funny...

Re: Saints sign Gay!
Hey guys this is my first post here. I really don't know what to think about Gay but he can't be any worse than Jason David. I really like the way the brass has been active this FA period. I just hope these signings help. Now I read on a couple of sites that Randy Moss may be next on the black and gold radar!
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
I've read that the Pats and Moss are close to an agreement.
|
Re: Saints sign Gay!
Ye Gods. Young, Gay, and Josh Buttocks. Perfect.
Our secondary won't have to make any plays, because the other teams will be laughing too hard to move. |
