POSTED 8:00 p.m. EST, march 6, 2008 MORGAN LANDS WITH THE SAINTS After failing to land veteran linebacker Zach Thomas, the New Orleans Saints have targeted another available linebacker. According to Steve Reed of CarolinaGrowl.com, former Panthers linebacker Dan Morgan has agreed to terms with the Saints. Morgan was a first-round pick of the Panthers in 2001. Thoughts on Dan Morgan pickup...
We are always giving injured players a chance to produce. Hope this pickup works out...

Ex-Panthers LB Morgan to sign with division rival New Orleans - CarolinaGrowl.com
This could be a VERY good signing!!! |
Re: Thoughts on Dan Morgan pickup...
Well, at least we know the Saints should lead the league in one category next year........most players on the injury report.
|
Re: Thoughts on Dan Morgan pickup...
if it doesn't work out we'll have a decent replacement in Shanle or Simoneau.
I wonder if this means we'll attempt to draft Mendenhall/Cromartie/McKelvin/Jenkins at 10th and get a LB/CB in the 2nd? or a RB in the second if we get a defense player at 10 overall. |

Re: Thoughts on Dan Morgan pickup...
This is a good pickup and roll of the dice . I think that it could be a big winner with little downside . Nothing ventured nothing gained . Ilike the fact the Fo is leaving no stone unturned to improve the defense . This guy is a beast if he can get and stay on the field. I also think he might have some history with Vilma at the U. I think that all moves before the draft can affect the picks in any round . I have a feeling that RB is a bigger priority than most of us think. Also good big athletic tackles are hugely valued in the nfl

Re: Thoughts on Dan Morgan pickup...
No harm here. If he stays healthy and produces, he is a definite upgrade. If not, he's cut.
|
Re: Thoughts on Dan Morgan pickup...
i think he another body for camp...or insurance if vilma isn't ready by preseason........

Re: Thoughts on Dan Morgan pickup...
not a big risk, but could be a huge reward....just makes me a lil nervous as he has had some pretty bad injuries and I would hate to see anything happen to him. If he gets his dome hurt again, he needs to retire.

Re: Dan Morgan signs with Saints?
Dan Morgan will serve as a safety net for Vilma just encase he has to sit out the beginning of the season. At most we should need him for eight games. He should have another concussions. Which should be his sixth and final one.

Re: Dan Morgan signs with Saints?
Wow! I didn't know he had 5 concussions... I like that we're making moves though.
|
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
I hope we find a way to put both of these animals on the field at once.Vilma and Morgan
|
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
He'll give you an average of 4 games a year. Good luck!
|
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
I am almost embarrassed to admit that I've seen this movie, but like in Not Another Teen Movie, the Dome needs to put on countdown on how many concussions Dan Morgan can have until he dies.

Good insurance policy, will keep whatever rookie OLB they draft on his toes.
|
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
Not One but 5 concussions 5. I think this is nuts. But if he stay healthy great move.

ScottF, can you answer this, if we have signed him, and then we cut him in camp, how much does the team lose? Like I said, I think this signing is a non-factor. Morgan's career high in tackles for a season: 102. |
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
Here's some interesting information for Saints Fans. I just read on CBSSportsline that Morgan has had 5 concussions in his career. Is it just me or does that seem high. A concussion bruises the brain. I think that doing it 5 times can't be good for one's health.
This is a snippet off CBSsportsline fantasy page...what bothers me is the not so encouraging prediction on how many games Morgan is projected to play in...I will still remain optomistic that the FO sees some production in the guy after all the negatives are brought to light "If he signs elsewhere, Morgan would be nothing more than a high-risk, low-reward Fantasy LB that is not even close to a lock to play eight games, much less 16. His career might be over. Don't spend a valuable draft pick on him in 2008." |
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
... well, wasn't it Papz who said Morgan could play half the season then Zack Thomas the other half? :) Guess it's now Morgan for the fist half, then Vilma for the second :broccoli:
.. hey, no one denies Morgan's ability... he just needs to stay in one piece for once in his life... |
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
This could very well be a move to make other teams think they won't draft Rivers......which is still a good possibility. Anyone think it may be a smoke-screen?

Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
na the guy has talent, he was a tackling machine at miami but i dont think he has been healthy for a full season which is pretty depressing

It's not just about the number of tackles... number of tackles don't tell the whole story. If you are denying his ability based on the stats you see on the web, well... |
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
I've seen him play, and he's a pretty good player, but I'm saying the guy's not all that great. A step up from Simoneau for sure, but you can't count on him to make any kind of significant contribution.

Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
Dan Morgan is the next Merrill Hodge, Eric Lindros, Andre Waters, Ted Johnson, or Steve Young waiting to happen !
Very interesting link in the USA Today about DM and his 5 concussions - written over 6 months ago ! The SAINTS mgmt should have read this article before signing Morgan. He has missed 40 of 96 games in his career. NFL 2007: Panthers LB Morgan gambling in return to football after 5 concussions - USATODAY.com |

With Morgan having experiencing 5 concussions I wanted more information about concussions and found the below link an interesting read.

A CURE FOR DAN MORGAN'S INJURIES.
FREE ADVICE. Hey Dan, Instead of trying to take somebodies head off with a hit... back off a little and just knock the snot out of him. This will cut down on the amount of injuries you incur and hopefully extend your career. |

Can't hurt. Need a fast guy on the outside to dog, though

Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
Adam Schien and Solomon Wilcox do not like the Dan Morgan signing by the Saints. Just on Sirius.
"a LB leads with his head and Morgan has a history of concussions, not a good signing by the Saints". Schien compared this to the Zach Taylor signing in Dallas and stated he does not like either signing. On the flip side, they both conceded if the signing was for very little $$$, Morgan, if healthy, can provide some leadership. They also said the Saints are hell bent on improving their LB corps! |
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
I haven't seen the details of the deal yet, but I'll guarantee you it will be a minimal deal with very little risk to the Saints. The upside is there and Morgan can man the Will with Vilma at his more comfortable Mike position. This will give Morgan more freedom and less wear and tear than he's seen throughout his career in the middle. Besides, Shanle is still there to step in if needed. I give the move a major thumbs up.
|
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
If, though a very big if, both are healthy... Morgan, Vilma, and Fujita make a great linebacking group. I don't think anyone can argue with that.
|
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
I'll be suprised if he makes it thru camp. Heck he might even knock himself out putting on his helmet...
|
Re: Dan Morgan (merged)
I think all things considered I would've have rather taken the chance on Takeo Spikes.
