Former Saint quarterback and Eyewitness Sports analyst Archie Manning says fans shouldn’t get too concerned about the home team after Monday’s dismal performance against Philadelphia. He said it might be just as good that the team didn’t shine too brightly.

“Sometimes things like that are good, said Manning. “It’s a little wakeup call, maybe to some veteran players, or even some newcomers, that it is hard out there in game situations. I was talking to Rick (Venturi) and saying that if everything was reversed and the Saints had played like the Eagles did and dominated, it probably wouldn’t be good at this point, because you still want to push people.

Archie said he expects Haslett to push the players this week and figures Saturday’s showing will be better, but according to Archie, Monday’s performance wasn’t all bad.

“I thought (Orlando) Ruff, after the first series, did a really good job in the middle. I like his motor and the free agent (tight end Zach) Hilton made a big play and he’s so tall. (Mel) Mitchell and Tebucky Jones are going to be good in the secondary. They really do have speed.

As far as Jones and Mel Mitchell and the rest of the defense goes, Archie thinks fans need to be patient and not get discouraged if the unit struggles early.

“You don’t make that many changes in a defense and it all comes together in just one offseason and two to three weeks of training camp, he said. “There’s a long way to go, but they’ll be alright.
