Last season he did have an off year, but so did the rest of the defense. I don't think this guy needs to be jerked around, just extend him and give him the money he deserves. He plays one of the most irreplaceable positions, and he is already borderline great. He should be at that point of hitting his prime now so my take is get it done. A five or six year extension with a nice bonus should resolve the matter. If this guy hits the free agent market next year he will be scooped up within the first hour of free agency.

Grant busted the bank last year and says He was injured and played through it. If he does not perform this year I beleive the team should release Him. I do not think the Saints have a real choice but to deal with Smith because they need Him. This is also a reason that the Saints really need to draft an impact player at this position to push them and make them fear losing their job. The team put themselves in this position by overpaying Grant in the first place.
