Re: is ellis better than?

Ellis was the better pick here. He is hopefully going to give us the solid DT that we have been craving since LeRoi Glover. Only I hope that Ellis will be able to stop the run better than Glover could.

Is that a serious question? Ellis is one of the "elite" players in this draft, and somebody who will have an immediate impact on this team. Don't get me wrong, I think McKelvin is a good player, but Ellis is one of those guys that has the chance to anchor our defensive line for a very long time. I am EXTREMELY pleased with this pick and the trade, thank you Saints.

Re: is ellis better than?

I'm always rooting to get the best LB with the first round pick. After being stung by the Alvin Toles incident (will someone PLEASE tell the Saints to stay away from Tennesse), I've been looking forward to another big dog in the 1st round. So, hearby I shed my anual tear since we passed on Keith Rivers.

BUT, they say that a linebacker's best friend is a hoss of a defensive tackle . . .

I would've preferred LB Keith Rivers. This kid Ellis had better not flop.

Re: is ellis better than?

Folks, you do realize that not only has Ellis graded out better than Rivers on virtually every draft board, but he also fills a serious position of need. Ellis was a first-team All-American and a guy that people say "love to play football." I think it's the best pick that we could have made, minus getting Glen Dorsey. This is a position that people have complained about for YEARS, I just can't believe that people aren't ecstatic with this pick. And this is coming from a person who has whined about not having a good linebacker pick in a draft in forever. But, I feel we've adequately addressed the linebacker position in free agency, and we've now done the one thing that every linebacker needs: we got a disruptive tackle who can eat up blockers. I watched some film on Ellis, and the one thing I noticed is that he was consistently double-teamed in every game, but he still got 8.5 sacks. That's what we need, Ellis to eat up blockers to free up Jonathan Vilma. Are you kidding me, Vilma and Ellis in the middle? How can you not be happy?

Hey, I'm good with that - if this guy is the real deal and Vilma gets / stays healthy. BUT , . . . I can't help but think back to the last DT we picked in the first round:

Jonathan Sullivan, DT, Georgia, 13.5 M signing bonus,
Eating at the media buffet during halftime

Re: is ellis better than?

It's easy to reflect on how we, as fans, have been burned by previous draft picks. However, IMHO, Ellis is light years better than Sullivan ever could have imagined being. That was a botched pick, and we all knew it then. Today you have very few people doubting the Saints choice in Ellis. This guy is going to be a stud for us.
