Now what? Round 5

we got enough picks to move up into the 4th so what area of the team do we need to address still?
I have hybrids high on my list. CB/FS, OLB/SS, DE/OLB, DT/DE. Slot Wr or TE

since we put so much into DT why not finish it with one more pick.
Ahtyba Rubin, IowaSt., 6027, 315, 5.17
here is the kid to back up HT.
or wait for some one like
Nick Hayden Wisconsin 6039, 291, 5.17

Or go for broke trade way up and give a pick next year or a player and go for
Xavier Adibi, Virginia Tech, 6018, 232, 4.69 (ILB/OLB/S)

who are ya'll looking at? Some nice slot WR and TEs are on the board

Re: Now what? Round 5

Will a solid FS prospect be available in the 4th? That Notre Dame player is still out there (but isn't he more of a SS?), and that kid from North Carolina is still available. I doubt either one will be available when we pick though.

I'd like to see a FS, a TE, PK, and O-line. But more important, really, is who's the best player out there. I don't mind trade up scenarios.

Re: Now what? Round 5

I'm thinking the best C or TE prospect available... maybe even a WR like Monk. It's going to be a long wait. I do like that Rubin kid... sounds like he can develop into a space eating run stuffer.

Re: Now what? Round 5

What about Geno Hayes?

Position:OLB Florida State: 6-1, 226 40 Time:4.68

BIOGRAPHY: Two-year starter awarded All-Conference honors last season after totaling 80/17.5/5. Also intercepted one pass and broke up three more. Sophomore-year totals included 59/12/3.

POSITIVES: Smallish, athletic linebacker who makes plays all over the field. Breaks down well, plays with great explosion, and flashes on the scene. Takes good angles to the action, covers a lot of area on the field, and displays speed in every direction. Gets depth on pass drops and shows skill in coverage. Possesses a great burst of closing speed and a hard-hitter who drives through tackles.

NEGATIVES: Does not consistently play within himself and pursues the action too aggressively. Undersized, gets caught up in blocks, and struggles getting through the trash.

ANALYSIS: Hayes is a solid athlete who's been productive at Florida State the past two years. He is best suited in a system that allows him to freely flow to the action and he offers a good amount of upside for the next level.

PROJECTION: Middle Fourth Round

hagan714 04-27-2008 10:14 AM

Re: Now what? Round 5

At only 218 pounds, he will need to bulk up some to compete at the NFL level. Prefers to run around blockers rather than take them on. Struggles to shed. Too aggressive at times. He has had some issues being exposed on the pass game. Durability could be an issue. Has off-the-field & character concerns.

Poor-man's Lawrence Timmons or Ernie Sims ?

Missed a few games with a knee injury in '06
Tased, arrested and later charged with assault on an officer, resisting arrest without violence and disorderly conduct following a bar fight in 2007
Was one of the Florida St. players involved in the academic cheating scandal

Theres the problem

Re: Now what? Round 5

Agreed. He'll fall, I bet, but after hearing that, I won't touch him.

How about this oversized guard? I keep looking over the centers but nothing jumps out at me.

Brandon Keith Northern Iowa 6-5.5, 343 40 Time:5.29

BIOGRAPHY: Junior-college transfer awarded All-Conference honors last season. Began his college career at Oklahoma.

POSITIVES: Strong, explosive offensive tackle in college who projects to guard. Fires off the snap, strong at the point, and gets movement from run-blocks, driving defenders off the line. Keeps his feet moving throughout the action, displays the ability to slide laterally, and plays with good pad level. Jolts defenders with good hand-punch or completely engulfs them at the point of attack. Stays with the action and rarely gives up an inch.

NEGATIVES: Does not consistently play with a sense of urgency and slow recognizing the action. Stiff, lacks top blocking balance, and overextends into opponents.

ANALYSIS: Keith is a well-traveled prospect who finally got his feet underneath him last season. Improved with more playing time and shows terrific upside potential for the next level. Possesses the size and athleticism to surprise a lot of people.

PROJECTION: Late Fourth Round

Re: Now what? Round 5

What about if we pick up Craig Steltz in the 5th. I think he will be there.

LordOfEntropy 04-27-2008 10:23 AM

Re: Now what? Round 5

I wouldn't mind picking up Steltz. But if we go after a safety, I think I'd prefer someone with better coverage skills. Still, I could live with that pick.

mighty12 04-27-2008 10:24 AM

Re: Now what? Round 5

I am sticking with Wesley Woodyard, or maybe even Highsmith.

Woodyard is supposedly undersized, but if you watch his film, the kid just knocked people OUT!

Highsmith was supposed to be a first round pick for his on field production, but after a poor combine he's been falling off the map. If he is there in the fifth round he is a steal.

D_it_up 04-27-2008 10:25 AM

Re: Now what? Round 5

I was thinking Steltz, too.

LordOfEntropy 04-27-2008 10:26 AM

Re: Now what? Round 5

I think Steve Justice is someone to consider, if he falls. He's still sitting there.

Steve Justice Position:C Wake Forest 6-3.5, 293 40 Time:5.27

BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter awarded All-Conference honors after his junior and senior seasons.

POSITIVES: Tough, intelligent center who.s a great leader on the field. Blocks with good lean, quick with his hands, and shows explosion in his all-around game. Plays with a nasty attitude, always looking for someone to hit, and does a good job quarterbacking the offensive line. Solid position blocker who seals opponents from the action. Effective with shotgun snap. Shows the ability to slide laterally. Effective on the second level and can hit a moving target.

NEGATIVES: Lacks the dominant base and does not drive opponents off the ball. Struggles handling larger opponents.

ANALYSIS: Justice is a competitive blocker with a terrific understanding of his position. His potential at the next level is in a zone blocking system.

PROJECTION: Late Third Round

hagan714 04-27-2008 10:27 AM

Re: Now what? Round 5

13. Wesley Woodyard, Kentucky, 6004, 227, 4.49 (OLB/SS)

Wesley Woodyard is the unquestioned leader of the Wildcat defense. As the starting WLB the past three years (he played some safety and MLB as a freshman), he's consistently racked up phenomenal stats and earned All-SEC honors. Woodyard is a great athlete. He shows great football awareness and has the speed to get to the ball. He has a great burst off the ball, a nose for the ball, and he brings a load when he gets to the ball. He's a very hard hitter. Smart with good awareness and instincts. Despite his (lack of) size, he plays an aggressive and physical style of football and has shown himself to be a solid tackler. With his athleticism and speed, he's comfortable dropping into coverage. Has fluid hips and does a nice job in coverage. He's a true leader on and off the field and has excelled academically and is involved in the community. No one will work harder.

You can't teach size and Woodyard is just undersized. He needs to get much heavier and stronger, which will help him improve getting off blocks (which is his biggest weakness). Struggles to fight through traffic and is not stout at the point. Some scouts would like to see him improve his tackling skills.

There's a lot to like about this guy but his lack of size is a monumental negative. Woodyard is simply a football player and that's a high compliment. He'll find a job. He might never be more than a backup and special teamer

I like him

We all know about highsmith

NolaBama 04-27-2008 10:33 AM

Re: Now what? Round 5

Steltz or Highsmith would be popular picks as well as appropriate values in the 5th round IMO. Our depth at LB has gotten a lot better through FA but we could benefit by adding more youth. Safety is a fairly strong spot for us, but again youth as well as flexibility in a guy who could play S/CB would be beneficial. Steltz would not be that guy for us, his coverage skills are pedestrian but he is a beast of a tackler.

Just my 2 cents.

Steveo

LordOfEntropy 04-27-2008 10:34 AM

Re: Now what? Round 5

Well, with Dan Morgan likely to have another concussion at some point during the season, I like the Woodyard pick. Another LB certainly wouldn't hurt.

BIOGRAPHY: Four-year starter awarded all-Conference honors after his senior and junior seasons. Led Kentucky in tackles last season, compiling a career high 139/8.5/2.5 after 142/9.5/2 the prior year. Totaled 100 tackles as a sophomore.

POSITIVES: Explosive one-gap linebacker best in pursuit. Displays speed in every direction, cuts off the corners from running backs and covers a lot of area on the field. Gets depth on pass drops, takes good angles to the action and nicely flows to the ball carrier. Strong for his size and durable. Displays a good head for the ball in run defense and relatively instinctive.

NEGATIVES: Controlled at the point by tight ends or fullbacks. Not a secure tackler. Stiff and not agile for an undersized linebacker.

ANALYSIS: Woodyard is competitive linebacker and respected team leader who plays hard. He has size limitations and is not skilled enough in coverage to get consideration at safety. His best opportunity would be in a Tampa Bay Buccaneers type of defense.

Ali Highsmith at Safety? Does he have the speed to cover a slot receiver? It be like Roy Toast of Dallas...

I'd sure like to see the Saints snag him regardless...

Philly just took him. Great value pick. Then again when you think about the Saints having a healthy Vilma as your 4th round pick...makes a guy get all tingly.

Re: Now what? Round 5

Erin Henderson has fallen a would a pretty good pick up. Also Vince Hall with the second pick in the 5th round or the 6th round. DJ Parker, S, Va Tech is a ball hawking S.

LordOfEntropy 04-27-2008 12:44 PM

Re: Now what? Round 5

Henderson is someone I've looked over before, and so is Hall. Both are possibilities. But I'm not sure about Parker.

D.J. Parker: S Virginia Tech 6-0, 192 40 Time: 4.60

BIOGRAPHY: Full-time starter the past two seasons after seeing extensive action with the first team as a sophomore. Senior-year totals included 59/3/7 after 41/2/9 as a junior.

POSITIVES: Instinctive safety with marginal size/speed numbers. Reads the action, effectively patrols centerfield, and remains disciplined. Solid range to the sidelines and works well with cornerbacks.

NEGATIVES: Lacks closing and recovery speed as well as quickness in his game. Not real physical or aggressive defending the run.

ANALYSIS: Parker is a solid college defender with limited upside at the next level. He could be used as a backup in a zone system.
