SR, normally I'm with you. I think that "character" is ambiguous in the extreme.
However, when "character" impacts work ethic, ability to stay out of jail during the regular season, and ability to learn from good coaching, then it matters a lot to me. I wish people would stop saying "so and so is (or is not) a character guy" and tell me what they mean by that. I like the good guys who can lead by being vocal and passionate, but I just as much like the bad guys who lead by example (kickin' butts on the field and so on). So, as long as the kid is coachable (and won't be missing time for being jailed, to cracked out, or what have you), I don't care much for the character talk. That said, it would be nice to have players who weren't morally bankrupt, but as far as being a good football player goes, I'm not sure what the connection is. |
