CAGER, ROSS INK NFL DEALS WITH GIANTS, SAINTS

HAMMOND - Former Southeastern Louisiana football standouts Earl Cager and Byron Ross, who were each a part of the team's gridiron revival in 2003, each reached deals with a pair of NFL clubs.

Cager signed a free agent deal with the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants while Ross received a tryout offer with the New Orleans Saints.

Cager, a 6-5, 330-pound guard, started all 11 games for the Lions last season and was a second-team All-Southland Conference selection. The New Orleans native and former St. Augustine High product reports to the team's mini-camp on May 8 after receiving attention from several NFL clubs.

"I'm really excited about the chance to follow my dream of playing in the NFL," Cager said. "The Giants are one of the great organizations in all of sports and I look forward to going up there and representing my family and the University."

Ross, a former Kentwood High product, finished second for the Lions in receptions in 2007 and was Southeastern's top deep threat. The honorable mention All-SLC selection received a tryout offer from the 2006 NFC South champions after impressing scouts at Southeastern's Pro Day last month with a 4.34 time in the 40-yard dash.

"This is a dream come true for me in pursuing a career in the NFL," Ross said. "The fact that it's with the Saints is an added bonus and I look forward to competing next week and continuing my goal."

Cager and Ross are the second and third former Southeastern players who will be in an NFL camp this summer. Former All-American Felton Huggins spent the final 10 weeks of the 2007 season on the Buffalo Bills practice squad after joining the NFL in 2006 as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"We may have lost the game, but you'll be hurting tomorrow." Doug Atkins
