Takeo Spikes, LB Two wounded MLB? he might be worth contacting
Jeremy Newberry, C We got a backup stating and his backup is under investigation. He too might be needed |

Re: Free-agent market still has players worth signing
Hagan,
You beat me to the punch. Those two were the obvious choices. A proven Spikes would upgrade our defense. This favors my "Heavy MLB" defense. Spikes plays the middle, Vilma the WLB, and Fugita (or Morgan) play SLB. Talk about improvement! Newberry is also a proven player. The coaching staff must feel pretty good about Goodwin, but I don't. This would be helpful. Too bad there aren't any proven Safeties on this list! What about CB, Cousin? We're starting to hit the time of year when cost might be a factor in who we pick up. |

Re: Free-agent market still has players worth signing
DitUp2,
I suppose. But, over the years, coaches have made so many mistakes it isn't worth reciting them. So, it is still plausible to second guess coaches (even if one should acknowledge their position with respect to the information - they have more). Further, I'm guessing it isn't an accident that they brought in Lehr (who can play C). Thus, I take it that they may not be 100% on Goodwin either. Certainly, there is no harm in brining in some additional proven competition for an important spot on the roster. Also, since the coaches aren't interested in answering my questions (any more than they're going to call for my opinion), it is more fun to do these things on this board with intelligent and interesting people. |

Re: Free-agent market still has players worth signing
Hagan,
Spikes is slowing down, and I just think that it wouldn't be prudent to ask him to cover the flats (and middle hooks) on the weakside. He'd just be stronger with a more limited role in pass coverage (it is easier to sheild the MLB in this way - in pass coverage - with the Safeties and OLBs). Thus, my suggestion. |
