With the 27th ranked defense and a bag full of excuses . Not very far .
Would the Saints had played either the Eagles or the Niners in the play offs ??? Do those teams look like they have taken the off season off ??? |

Smitty-- Go easy on the ship jumpers. They thought they saw the ship taking-on water. They jumped overboard too quickly.
The Gulf is a big place. I think you shoud leave em\' out there until they learn their preseason lesson. P.S.- After we beat Seattle would be too quick to let em\' back on. Make them wait till the victory over Huston. They must learn their lesson ,so we don\'t have to go back through this next preseason. [Edited on 25/8/2003 by BillyCarpenter1] |

I cannot belive some of you so called saints fans. I will admit that i\'m a bit concerned about the way the saints defense has looked but damn it is only the preseason and already i\'m hearing this is a horrible defense, or its the same ole saints. Give them a chance!!!!!!

We are not jumping ship. If that were the case we would no longer be following the team and posting here. Some of you folks though would believe Haslett if he told you that water coming in the boat is of no concern even as it reaches your neck. Meanwhile the rest of us already have our life jackets on.

Don\'t worry, the bilge pump will be in by Week 1 and after a few weeks in drydock, the ship will be fully repaired and ready to go.

News from the captain , he cannot find the leak in the boat .................
\"We\'ve got to get better,\" Haslett said. \"We haven\'t stopped the pass in three games. We\'ve got to get coaches and players working on it. I don\'t know why we\'re not doing it.\" At least he did not blame it on the fans :casstet: Is it cause too worry when a former defensive coordinator , turned head coach says \" I do not know why we are not doing it \" . Who\'s job is it ??? |

I have been one of the people openly embarrassed about the play of our defense this preseason. I have openly berated their play. Before the preseason I predicted a 10-6 year.
I can\'t understand why people have the same comments like \" I will admit that i\'m a bit concerned about the way the saints defense has looked but damn it is only the preseason and already i\'m hearing this is a horrible defense, or its the same ole saints. Give them a chance!!!!!!\" If your car starts to sputter and stall do you wait until it seizes before you start fixing it? Our defense can\'t stop anything? Granted it\'s preseason, but this is a competetive game played by professional athletes that don\'t like to lose. To say that we are playing \"vanilla defense\" is simply an excuse for terrible fundamentals on the football field. We can\'t tackle and there\'s nothing vanilla about that. If it were simply blown assignments or inability to adjust to play fakes, or lack of scheming I\'d be on board with people that comment on a vailla style. But we are being individually outplayed. We are lacking in bantam football basics out there. You put one ballcarrier against one defender, I don\'t care if it\'s preseason or the super bowl. If you consistently are missing the tackle then it\'s all excuses. There is no excuse for that. If the team isn\'t practicing defensive schemes they plan on playing in the regular season then they are stupid. We have seven new defensive starters and they will need time to gel and gain experience in our \"game defense\". If we\'re not playing it now, but simply going through the motions, then when will they get experience in it? I don\'t think it\'s in our best interests for them to play \"our game defense\" for the first time in the regular season. All I see is a defense that looks like they have been asked to keep it simple and focus on the basics, and guess what....we are sucking at the basics of defensive football. Good forbid we complicate things. People talk about the players that aren\'t playing right now, but I can assure you we will not field our forecasted starters all season. People will get injured and we will need replacements to play. The two biggest names we have missed so far are Grant and Howard, but the DE position with back-ups in has been one of the few bright spots. I realize that preseason success does not translate into regular season wins, but if you aren\'t VERY WORRIED about our defense as it looks now you have your head buried too far in the sand or your a$$. The proof is in the pudding and there is no proof or even visible potential shown so far that we are better than last year on that side of the ball. When Haslett makes excuses I get worried. When he makes statements suggesting he is fixing the problem I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Right now I have doubts. It\'s not the same ole Saints, it\'s a whole new look of crap on our defense. Last year we couldn\'t keep up, this year we can\'t remember what to do when we can. We need a fast start against the weak teams. We can\'t afford to let these ones slip away because we are unprepared. |

The constant problem has been blown assignments or just getting beat in coverage. The run defense has been rock solid. IMO- Part of the problem has been the lack of a pass rush. The cornerbacks have had to cover for a long time. The other problem has been the cornerbacks have been beaten to often. Another thing is the QB\'s we have played have made some damn good passes at times, but again, they have had all day to throw the ball. I have all 3 games taped and I have wathed them several times. I beleive once they start rushing the passer that the pass coverage will be better. I\'m not saying it\'s gonna be great, but better. |

You\'re right Billy, the tackling was better against the Jets, but I don\'t believe it was as consistent against the 49ers. I\'m probably just nitpicking some d-line stuff, but I never thought our tackles were doing a good job in any of the games, regardless of the stats. We gave up limited rush yards, but on many plays it was weak offensive block, or failed combo block that allowed our player to make the tackle. A couple of running plays by the 49ers were IMO a line misread by the RB that caused it to be ineffective. We never sealed the gap, the RB didn\'t hit it. I give that to inability on the other teams offense rather than a kudo to our defense. Individually we weren\'t winning many wars.
