Deke: Notice served – Saints 5 and 0
Deke Bellavia Reporting Turkey shoot...butt whippin'...taken out to the woodshed...are just a few slogans Who Dats use to describe what the New Orleans Saints did to the New York Giants in the Superdome. The G-Men from the Big Apple came way down yonder to New Orleans...and simply put, found out who really is the best team in football. New Orleans dominated the Giants in every phase of the game. The three-plus hour carnage was another strong indication that the Saints have a very special team that should be considered a front-runner to win the Super Bowl. The Giants came into the Superdome with the #2 offense in the league, the best defense and what many felt was the best overall team in the NFL. Now I ask...how does the rest of the country feel about our beloved New Orleans Saints after that 48 to 27 win? The Saints piled up nearly five hundred yards of offense, and they scored 33.8 more points than the Giants were allowing. New Orleans has to get better from week to week, but right now, there isn't a team that can compare to the Black & Gold. Seven different Saints players scored touchdowns; they completely took the Giants out of their game plan. Going into the game with the Saints, New York kept the ball an average of over thirteen more minutes per game than their opponent. The Saints turned the tables on New York...holding the ball for sixty percent of the time during the game. And the Saints, who some said was a “finesse team,” were the much more physical team in the “battle of the un-beatens.” Sean Payton had a masterful game plan that was executed to perfection and the Saints upped their record to 5-0. I don't know if this is one of those so called “statement games,” but I do know which team made a statement. Coach Payton has said you must improve each time you step on the field, and he and his team have done so. Payton has been calling plays with more balance. He came out of his own pocket to bring in a proven successful Defensive Coordinator. He brought in a tough gritty new D-Line Coach in Bill Johnson. And, he switched up his routine during the Saints bye week, which allowed his team to heal up and get some much needed rest. That is the sign of a coach, who knows his team...and he knows what it is going to take to win a championship. And, I must mention the moves of the Saints Front Office and GM Mickey Loomis. Loomis brought in the right players this off season...players like Tony Hargrove, Jabari Greer, veteran leader Darren Sharper. And, all of us scratched our heads when the Saints moved up in the NFL Draft to take a punter. Well, Loomis and his staff knew what they were doing. The right moves were made this off season and they are paying huge dividends for the Saints. I would be out of line if I didn't mention the play of the 12th man. Coaches and players alike all agree that crowd noise helps and can play a factor in the game. You know what? It did and it has. The Saints are 3-0 at home and the fans of the Black &Gold have to be given credit, recognized ...and most of all shown some love. Who Dat Nation...take a bow! You've done your part in helping the team you so dearly love get off to a 5-0 start. There's a lot of football left to be played, but right now the Saints are clearly the best team in the NFL. New Orleans has beaten teams with their offense, their defense and their special teams. And they'll shoot for a 6-0 start next week at Miami. A coach once told me that in the coaching profession you have to take things one week at a time, and you have to have a short memory--good or bad. But that very same coach also said to enjoy the journey. The Saints are on a journey right now. Where this journey ends...only time will tell, but right now the journey looks as if it'll take us to where now Black & Gold team has taken us before. That could very well be the Super Bowl. We must not get ahead of ourselves, but this certainly feels good. So...enjoy the journey. And, although this was only one game, the Saints served notice to the rest of the NFL and the world...the Boys from the Big Easy ain't going down without a fight, and they plan on fighting until the final bell is rung.
