Saints hold off stubborn Rams 28-23 to stay undefeated

Saints quarterback Drew Brees
He continued his recent struggles Sunday, throwing as many interceptions (two) as touchdown passes against the St. Louis Rams. He now has thrown one more interception (seven) than touchdown passes (six) in his last four games after throwing 13 scoring passes and just two interceptions in his first six games.
Brees was sacked once and completed 18 of 26 passes for 223 yards for an 89.1 passer rating.
"We're not content with where we're at and the way we've played these last few weeks, " said Brees, who threw a laser to wide receiver Robert Meachem for a 27-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. "We as an offense need to close the game out when we're given the opportunity. We didn't do that (today)."

Marques Colston
He played the role of spectator for much of the game, catching both passes thrown to him for 17 yards. He also gained six yards on an end around.
He was involved in one of the game's key plays with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter. He had designs on scoring a touchdown when he caught a pass from Brees and dived head first into the end zone. But Rams free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe jarred the ball from Colston at the 1-yard line and it rolled out of the end zone for a touchback.
After catching 36 passes for 551 yards and six touchdowns in his first eight games, Colston has only three catches for 62 yards and no touchdowns in his last two. He continues to lead the team in receptions (39), receiving yards (613) and touchdown catches (six).
Rams wide receiver Danny Amendola
St. Louis will look back at a few lost opportunities, but none bigger than a drop by Amendola on third-and-1 from its 41 with 6:37 remaining. Trailing 28-17, Rams quarterback Marc Bulger appeared to hit Amendola in stride on a crossing route with an open field ahead of him to the end zone. Amendola tried to run before catching the ball, which clanked off his chest. On fourth-and-1, the Saints stuffed running back Steven Jackson for a 1-yard loss, taking over possession at the Rams' 40.
How the game was won
Saints special teams came through in a big way, providing perhaps the game's biggest play when Courtney Roby returned the second half kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown for a 21-14 lead. It is the Saints first kick return for a touchdown since Michael Lewis scored on a 96-yarder against the Atlanta Falcons in Game 15 of the 2004 season.
"I was just reading my blocks. They did a great job of covering people up. Then, I just tried to find the kicker, and once I got around him, I just wanted to be sure I stayed in bounds, " said Roby, who said he's been hearing it from teammates ever since he failed to reach the end zone with his 87-yard kickoff return at Miami three weeks ago.

Saints running back Reggie Bush vs. Rams middle linebacker James Laurinaitis
Bush had his best game this season, scoring twice, on a 3-yard run around left end and a 15-yard catch-and-run from Brees. He compiled 103 all-purpose yards on 10 touches, including a 55-yard run in the third quarter. That run exceeded his previous long of the season by 36 yards.
Complete game coverage

"I think we were catching them in their nickel personnel, and I think that's why we were so successful in the running game when I was in there, " said Bush, who rushed for a team-high 83 yards on six carries.
Laurinaitis, a second-round pick from Ohio State in April, was credited with four tackles.
By the numbers
Rams running back Steven Jackson became the third running back in as many games to rush for more than 100 yards against the Saints. He rushed 26 times for 131 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 30-yard run in the first quarter. He was limited to 31 yards rushing on 10 carries in the second half, thanks in part to the Saints doing a better job of filling their lane and putting eight men in the box. "I don't know if there was any magic formula other than our effort and energy to the ball, " Saints Coach Sean Payton said.
Jackson has rushed for 915 yards, third best in the NFL behind Tennessee's Chris Johnson (1,091) and Minnesota's Adrian Peterson (917).
From the coach's mouth
"I say this all the time: Your roster has to be ready to play, and that is the nature of this league. " - Payton on having reserve players step in and replace three injured starters in the secondary.
