Milloy released
2 Sep 03 / by Bryan Morry, Patriots Football Weekly

Lawyer Milloy

It's not unusual for teams to continue tweaking the roster in the week before the first game as all 32 teams release and sign players at a frenzied pace to prepare for the opener. But it is surprising when a team releases a four-time Pro Bowl safety and team captain as the Patriots did Tuesday morning when they announced Lawyer Milloy, 29, was cut.

Milloy played seven seasons in New England and totaled 846 tackles, seven sacks, 19 interceptions, 12 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries. He led the team in tackles in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. He also was a huge part of two AFC Championship teams and one Super Bowl winner.

Milloy went to his first Pro Bowl in 1998 starting a string of four all-star appearances in five years, including 2002, and was the first Patriots safety selected to the Pro Bowl since Fred Marion in 1985.

He was a mark of durability during his career in New England playing in all 112 professional games with 106 consecutive starts. He was first voted a team captain in 1999 and was subsequently voted as a captain in each of the next three seasons.

The Patriots were negotiating to reduce Milloy's cap hit for this season, but obviously could not reach an agreement. Milloy's cap number for 2003 was scheduled to be in $5.8 million range, but since his release came after June 1, the Patriots can spread out his accelerated cap hit (around $5.6 million) over two seasons with about $1.4 million coming this year and $4.2 million next year in the form of dead money.

Milloy's salary, according to the NFLPA, jumped from $525,000 in 2002 to $4.4 million in 2003 in what was the fourth year of what was originally a seven-year, $35 million. That original contract had two tiers with the first a four-year $15 million portion that included $6 million up front. After the fourth season, the Patriots held an option to pick up the remaining three years for $20 million with a $2 million bonus payment.

The safeties on the roster who could replace the 6-0, 210-pound Milloy in the starting lineup are Aric Morris, Chris Akins and Antwan Harris.

I just saved some space Billy. Good reporting though.

We have a need at safety and the cap room. If they do not make every effort in the world to sign Milloy, I will be jumping on the boat with FWtex.

Just think -- Lawyer Millloy, Tebucky Jones, and Dale Carter in our secondary. That ain\'t sounding too bad....

We can only hope. We have the money but will they do it? Who knows. Haz did say however that they were waiting to sign another player off another team before they announced the other 2 members of the practice squad. As I said we can only hope!

We have to make this happen this would be a huge addtiton for this team. I think we would have to pay him at least 5 million this year to get him though...anyone else know any other team that is gonna try to get him..i hope the saints can get to him first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am most definitely for this!! this is a huge christmas present they better not pass up. He and tbuck already have the chemistry and they may be able to teach venturi something about defense.

Problem comes to who do you cut. Obvious choice would be Gleason but he is a special team standout. Hawthorn? This could mean more shuffling of reserves which I am all for at this time.

If the Saints don\'t make a play for this guy, they better be prepared to do some tall explaining! With a definite need at safety, why would you pass up a perennial pro bowler?I\'m sure we\'ve got the money!

The Chiefs are the other team mentioned in wanting Milloy. They need defensive help too and have the money to sign him also. I wonder how good of friends Milloy and T-Buck were in New England? Maybe T-Buck can help get him here. Haz has often said they are always looking to improve this team, I guess now we\'ll see. Huh?

The more I think about it ,this is a no brainer signing for the Saints Milloy is a perfect fit at strong safety for us. We have ample cap room there is no reason not to do this deal other than someone else offering the sky for him. If the Saints ignore this guy as they did Randel Godfrey they will have earned every comment of moron leveled at them.

anyway the saints could sign him today or what??

tweeky 09-02-2003 10:43 AM

He\'ll never make it to us. 16 other teams have a shot at him (and his enormous salary).
But we had better take a shot at him.

I think i heard that he and Tebucky Jones didn\'t get along that well. (I might be mistaken)

Note: If we do claim him and his enormous salary, we damn sure won\'t be signing that zillion dollar shut-down corner next year or a big time LB.

Is he worth that? Thats what Haz and Company have to look at. I\'d love to have him. But is he too expensive for the long term?

Sorry about being the buzz-kill

At this point in the quest for the Super Bowl. A bird in the hand is better than 2 mights in the bush. We might sign a super corner next year and we might sign a prime time LB next year. As of right now we have a chance to sign a Pro Bowl caliber saftey. I say do it ! Not if we can, not if somebody says we can, DO IT!

Does anyone know the wavier rules I thought a player with more than 4 years experence was said to be released rather than waived? Which would mean we would\'nt have to eat his big contract he is in effect a free agent. Icould be very wrong on this.
Also with his contract if he is subject to normal wavier rules he may clear waivers anyway.

Don\'t get me wrong, I think we should sign him. I\'m just stating the case why we may not.

He could be the missing link. I still think we could grab a SD CB next year any way.

The more I think about this the more I think we should pay this guy all he wants for 1 year. Mitchell will be back next year and we will have options.

If I find out we passed on this guy, I\'ll be the 1st to jump on the \"we\'re stupid\" bandwagan and willingly say \"I\'m a moron, I was SO wrong, and Haz and company are the equivalent of the NFL village idiots.

Why do I get that sinking feeling of crushed hopes?

Did some research for lunch on the waiver system and found this. The rule is below but it basicly says if a player with 4 or more years experance is cut between the start of the waiver period and the trading deadline(mid oct.) he isa free agent. Lets go sign Milloy NOW!!

ARTICLE XXII

WAIVER SYSTEM

Section 1. Release:

(a) Whenever a player who has finished the season in which his fourth year of credited service has been earned under the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle Plan is placed on waivers between February 1 and the trading deadline, his contract will be considered terminated and the player will be completely free at any time thereafter to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with any Club, and any Club shall be completely free to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with such player, without penalty or restriction, including, but not limited to, Draft Choice Compensation between Clubs or First Refusal Rights of any kind, or any signing period. If the waivers occur after that time, the player’s Player Contract will be subject to the waiver system and may be awarded to a claiming Club. However, if such player is claimed and awarded, he shall have the option to declare himself an Unrestricted Free Agent at the end of the League Year in question if he has a no-trade clause in his Player Contract. If such player does not have a no-trade clause and the Player Contract being awarded through waivers covers more than one additional season, the player shall have the right to declare himself an Unrestricted Free Agent as set forth above at the end of the League Year following the League Year in which he is waived and awarded.

(b) Whenever a player who has finished less than the season in which his fourth year of credited service has been earned under the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle Plan is placed on waivers, the player’s Player Contract will be subject to the waiver system and may be awarded to a claiming Club.

One last sentiment on this Milloy thing. I understand that secrets need to be kept from whoever about offenses and defenses and not put out in public. However I think the Saints need to go after this guy loud and proud and show us that they are at least trying to give us a Super Bowl team. At times this bunch acts like the CIA, where if they tell us anything at all they have to kill us. Some of us fans have been waiting for a Super Bowl team longer than most of these players have even been alive. Come on Haz and Loomis give us something to cheer about. Before some of us are too old to enjoy the game, or die trying.

HAHA im a saints fan for long time i\'m imune to heartache it\'s more of a heartburn now lol...but i\'m still there cheering or cussing because it\'s my team and I support them win or lose i enjoy watching them and reading about them and the only thing that would really put a bad taste in my mouth would be if they moved from NO..if they did that i probally would quit watching football...the saints are the saints and i remember when they sucked so bad that OMG it was painful to even say that was my team but now they contend and that is a definate plus that makes my time i spend watching them on sundays much more enjoyable...thats all that matters to me

and as long as everytime i hear about them on tv i turn it up and sit in front of it like a 5 yr old or whenever i get that uneasy/excited/unsure/happy feelign before every kickoff and think of how many times they they have given me sundays of happiness where nothing else mattered cept watching my boys or how soemtimes they fold at end of games or seasons i remember this is a team i have spent last 25 yrs watching..watching players come and go and the excitement of getting a quality player well THIS IS THE EXCITMENT I LOVE WOOO HOOO SAINTS HAHAHAHA

WOO HOOOO

later sorry to ramble haha

Wasn\'t this guy a pro-bowler last year?

Has anyone stopped and asked \"why?\"
Why was this guy cut? It claims differencing of opinions on contract negotiations, but you don\'t just let a pro-bowler who is in his prime slip from your grasp, unless the city in which you play starts with the letters \"N\" and \"O\", of course. :P Belichick is not an idiot.

Publicly Belichickis saying this was purely a salary issue. I agreee on face value it does\'nt seem to make a lot of sense form the Pats side unless there is something we don\'t know . I can\'t see any negatives to makeing this deal and because he was cut is\'nt much of a reason not to talk to him.

Never said that we shouldn\'t talk to him, I just like to ask the questions.

The fact that he knows Tebucky, and is used to playing with him is a huge plus, in my opinion. I\'m big on chemistry, which is something that this defense does not have yet, nor could you expect them to- they haven\'t taken enough snaps together to reach that point yet.

Here is what Belichick had to say publicly on the issue.

By John Clayton

ÂÂÂÂ*
Four-time Pro Bowl strong safety Lawyer Milloy was released by the Patriots on Tuesday after refusing to take a paycut.

Milloy, 29, was in the fourth year of a seven-year, $35 million contract and was scheduled to make $4.5 million this year. He had a $5.856 million cap number, which New England was trying to reduce. The Patriots will lose $4.05 million off of next year\'s salary cap because the remaining proration of his contract.

\"This is a player and person I have immense respect for, and he meant a lot to this team and organization,\" Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. \"Unfortunately he\'s a casualty of the system. The timing is not good. We tried to find a way to make it work. In the end, we weren\'t able to get to that point.\"

Belichick said the negotiations for a revised deal have been ongoing since April. Belichick said this is not the way he wanted the relationship to end, adding that a player of Milloy\'s caliber can\'t be replaced.

Milloy played 106 consecutive games and has been the Patriots\' captain the past three seasons. The Patriots signed strong safety Rodney Harrison to work with him during the offseason; Harrison has been working at free safety.

Antwan Harris and Chris Akins will compete for the strong safety job. There are no plans to bring in another player from outside the organization.

Thought i\'d post a scouting evaluation on lawyer just for the hell of it. We would use him at SS not FS so he would not be responsible as much in coverage.

Height: 6-0
Weight: 210
DOB: 11/14/73
Position: S
TWR grade: 8.6

LAWYER MILLOY

Strengths: Has excellent size and speed. Is a big-hitting safety who doesn’t have to be in a phone booth. Is a good tackler in space. Wraps up and rarely misses a tackle. Has excellent diagnostic skills. Takes few false steps. Takes good angles to the ball. Excellent in lateral pursuit; does great job of getting over trash. Has great speed and can reach the sideline in cover 2. Intimidates receivers. Is intelligent and is a leader.

Weaknesses: Is a bit stiff in his hips. Doesn’t have great ball skills in coverage. Gets in trouble against receivers and running backs. Is overaggressive against the run and gets burned on play-action.

Bottom line: Milloy is one of the most physical and intimidating safeties in the NFL. He has not missed a game because of injury in seven seasons and has averaged more than 100 tackles per season. The only way to limit his effectiveness is to have him turn and run with a quality receiver. -- The War Room

I\'d say about 27 or so teams are probably interested.
Of that about 15 or so can afford him
Of that about 9 or 10 are willing to pay for him
Of those he\'d probably only want to play for a contender, which the Saints definitly are, especially if we add him.

I think we have about a 1 in 4 shot of signing him, assuming we try to.

I feel the crushing heartbreak approaching. :(

Would be easier to say who doesn\'t need him, ie, it\'s a shorter list. Off the top of my head, I can say that the Eagles, Dolphins, Cowboys, and the Ravens would have no need for him. After that, I can\'t think of anymore.

I agree B&B, but I can\'t think of a team that needs him as badly as the Saints. I think the Saints will go after him, but I just wonder how long he\'s going to take to decide what team he wants to play for.

First off - I will remember these quotes:

1. \"If they do not make every effort in the world to sign Milloy, I will be jumping on the boat with FWtex.\"

2. \"If I find out we passed on this guy, I\'ll be the 1st to jump on the \"we\'re stupid\" bandwagan and willingly say \"I\'m a moron, I was SO wrong, and Haz and company are the equivalent of the NFL village idiots. \"

Now maybe you guys will begin to understand why I am so upset with this team and down on the defense. This is NOT the first time a guy like this has come along this season. Chris Claiborne was my Lawyer Milloy this off-season. Obviously we passed on him. I\'m pretty confident that we won\'t sign him, but we may sign some no-name third stringer that Haslett will tout like he\'s the next coming of Lawyer Milloy. When he\'s not Haslett will go back to the \"I just don\'t understand it tag-line.\"

Don\'t get your hopes up guys. I too want it to work out, but odds are it won\'t.
