Well it depends.

In South Louisiana 35 years ago(When I was a kid and into that stuff) it was a curse.

"I'm gonna put a gris-gris on you."

Other meanings are a bag of weird stuff meant to protect the wearer from bad spirits.

Nowadays it has morphed into meaning all kinds of stuff, some of it good.

It was also a newspaper way back in Baton Rouge. I think an LSU student paper but its kinda fuzzy.

I knew it can be good. Otherwise, why would people go to Marie Laveau to buy a bag of gris-gris?

That's funny you mentioned that! I got a fortune cookie before pre season that I've kept with me ever since!

I still carry it in my purse!
