Re: Add to the list of odd events that has happened in Saints History.
I don't remember the year, just remember that we needed one win with two games left to reach the playoffs. We were playing the Redskins, on the second to last game and were down by less than a TD and driving late in the 4th quarter. We come up with this big play that puts us down near the goal line, but wait...there's a flag.
It seems that Dexter Manley spit on Jim Dombrowski, and when "Dumbo" retaliates, we draw a 15 yd. unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, negating the big play and the chance to win the game and advance...and of course we went on to lose the next game and sit home and watch. If anybody remembers this, please step forward and let me know. I know I'm not just dreaming this up. |

I went back and did some digging of my own. If you look far enough down in the article I provided a link for where they are talking about 1988, you'll see a description of the incident and it turned out that it negated a 37 yd. FG attempt by Morten Andersen that would have tied the game and turned it into a 53 yarder...which he missed. The Redskins ended up winning the game by 3...27-24. Anyway, it was 1988 and we finished 10-6 along with 2 other teams in our division, but somehow did not even go to the playoffs. If we would have won that game with the Manley incident, we would have won our division and gone to the playoffs. I knew something happpened. |

Re: Add to the list of odd events that has happened in Saints History.
.. if you mean "stuff that only happens to the Saints", the ones I remember the most are:
* It was either 1987 or 88, during the time instant replay took a hiatus, playing the Whiners in the Dome, Montana to Rice, Rice was all alone at the Saints 15, started jogging towards the endzone, and somehow loses control of the ball around the 3, the ball rolls out the endzone, and the line judge still calls a TD for Rice. The reaction to the replay was epic. * The Dome crowd getting the first ever "too much crowd noise" 15 yard penalty. * The back judge's pass interference, tackling Joe Horn on what would've been a 40-50 yard TD (same dude that botched that OT coin flip) * Ditka challenging a critical play against the Browns, losing the challenge, then before the play resumes, a different angle being shown on the big monitor which showed the Saints were right, a play being run, then Ed Hoculi addressing the booing crowd with "at the time we reviewed the play, we did not have THAT view. The Saints could've challenged again, as there's no rule against challenging the same play twice". |

Re: Add to the list of odd events that has happened in Saints History.
GOOD JOB....I added to the list.
thanks guys keep it going THIS IS GREAT Here are some events ...add to it..... 1.Kickoff return on first play in team history 2.Ditka gives away draft for Ricky Williams 3.With all respect to those it effected---Katrina 4.Home game in Giants stadium? LSU Tiger and Alamo Dome also. 5.Jacksonville lateral play--then missed extra point. 6.Aaron Brooks backwards pass to a lineman 7.Tampa Bay get first win ever versus Siants 8. How about the biggest (at the time) come from behind win by the 49ers. We were winless at 0 - 13 December 7, 1980. Joe Montana losing 35-7 at halftime rallies them back to win in overtime 38-35. 9.1978 Steve Bartkowski heaves a Hail Mary pass to Alfred Jenkins Pass interference, ball on the one. Falcons win 20-17 10.Rams FG kick in 1983 to boot the Saints out of the playoffs 11.Houston Texans select Mario Williams with #1 pick 12.Have 2 QB's named 'Billy Joe' on the team at the same time 13.How about whe we were up by 5 on GB & could have killed the clock & TOlliver threw a pass(Ditka about killed him)< I believe this game was The Browns and Couch at QB. 14.Finally made Superbowl and end up playing Archie's son. 15.With 12 wins only earned a wildcard because SF had 13 wins. 16.2 points conversion successful after Culpepper fumbles the ball to keep us out of the playoffs after we only had to beat one of three last-place teams to get into the playoffs. 2002, right? ....... 17.We fired the tee-fetching dog when cleaning house, ended in 2000 18.we were one of two NFL teams (Chiefs) with a conventional cheerleading squad--- college type outfits, guys on the squad, and acrobatics. 19.lost 21 point lead in 4th Quarter on (special Sunday night edition of) Monday night football in 1984, in a game that ended shortly before 1am, due to presidential debate.30-27 ot loss to Dallas 20.Kyle Turley throwing the Jets helmet 21.When the fans pelted the refs with bottles, in the endzone, at the end of the game. 22.When the voodoo priestess came out, and did the hex dance, before we played the Rams in 2000 Wildcard game ...and it worked!!! 23.I remember once against the Falcons a few years ago we got a defensive holding penalty on a Falcons FG attempt. I don't think I've seen that since...one of those penalties that could ONLY happen to us... 24.How about the Abramowicz running into to sideline camera headfirst? For 10 years it was the only Saints highlight you ever saw 25.Tom Dempsey's 63 yard field goal November 8, 1970!!!! 26.Archies attempt to QB sneak into the Endzone vs. the Bears that turned into a bouncing bumbling stumbling 40 yard fumble 27.Drafting a kicker 11th pick overall...Russell Erxleben...and it doesn't work out??? 28.Players name.....Guido Merkins,Jubilee Dunbar,Happy Feller 29.It was either 1987 or 88, during the time instant replay took a hiatus, playing the Whiners in the Dome, Montana to Rice, Rice was all alone at the Saints 15, started jogging towards the endzone, and somehow loses control of the ball around the 3, the ball rolls out the endzone, and the line judge still calls a TD for Rice. The reaction to the replay was epic. 30.The Dome crowd getting the first ever "too much crowd noise" 15 yard penalty 31.The back judge's pass interference, tackling Joe Horn on what would've been a 40-50 yard TD (same dude that botched that OT coin flip 32.Ditka challenging a critical play against the Browns, losing the challenge, then before the play resumes, a different angle being shown on the big monitor which showed the Saints were right, a play being run, then Ed Hoculi addressing the booing crowd with "at the time we reviewed the play, we did not have THAT view. Re: Add to the list of odd events that has happened in Saints History.
A woman tossed beer at Bum Phillips after Saints loss in 1985, just before he resigned and his son, "Cuddly Wade", took over.
1976, Archie Manning was ejected from a game vs the Houston Oilers (before they were the Tennessee Titans) for bumping an official while responding to a scuffle when Oilers CB Zeke Moore deliberately poked Saints receiver Tinker Owens in the eye. The thing was that Arch was ejected from a game that he never played in. He was inactive. |
