A little humor in geography class today...

I am taking a Geography of Popular Culture class at LA Tech. Today started our last section of lectures for our last exam which covers nothing but sports. The origin of soccer was the first sport we covered at length. Our professor spoke about how, in 793 AD, Vikings attacked monasteries in Lindisfarne, England, because the monks had a lot of gold and weren't very good fighters. Vikings sacking English villages went on for centuries, but the Anglo-Saxons finally decided to fight back. Sometimes they defeated the Vikings, and sometimes they lost. Regardless, whenever the Vikings left the town, the town residents would defile the bodies of the deceased Vikings. They would sever a head and kick it around town. I couldn't contain myself anymore when he said the Anglo-Saxons finally stood up for themselves and started beating the Vikings to death and defiling their bodies. I mumbled under my breath "That just happened a couple of weeks ago in New Orleans". He stopped his lecture and asked me to repeat what I said. After I repeated it louder for him and the rest of the class to hear, he bent over laughing for a minute and then started writing something down on his attendance sheet. He said that he enjoyed that comment so much, that he gave everyone in the class five bonus points. He isn't even a Saints' fan, but at the end of the lecture his final powerpoint slide said two words...."Who Dat!"

Good story. You know that you now have to recommend that instructor to everybody.
I graduated from Tech in 98 myself. Electrical Engineering.

I'm thinking about joining Mr. Fitzgerald, and becoming a Phoenix. Seriously. I need to go back to school. NEVER TOO OLD.

Gr8 story. And yes, I have always enjoyed kicking severed Viking heads from village to village - because I couldn't get their pants on the ground

It's definitely never too late. I started back at the age of 30. I will be 34 next month and a senior after this quarter. LA Tech even did an article on me a couple of months ago for non-traditional students. It was the best decision I ever made in my life.

Seeing that he basically is the geography department (because he is the only geography professor here), people that have to take a geography class have no choice. lol I have enjoyed his classes so much that I made geography my minor and will be returning to get my degree in it after I graduate with my history degree next winter.

Graduated in '98, huh? Did you ever go to Stow's or the Que Stick?

I appreciate the words. I will be 37, when I go back in the fall. At least that's the projection. I will be looking like Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School. Well, not that old.

LOL! That's how I felt, too. I thought there wouldn't be many people my age when I started back, because I hadn't been in college in 10 years. I was pleasantly surprised at how many 30-, 40-, and even 50-somethings there were doing the same thing that I was doing. Good luck to you. You'll do fine, I'm sure.

At LA Tech, you never can tell. Some professors may be attempting to speak in English, but they don't do it very well. LOL

Heard about them, but never went there. Did you see the part where I was in EE. All we had time to do was study. Yea, you've seen us around campus, not having fun. Plus, drove back and forth from Shreveport 5 days a week for three years. Not much time left after that. I could tell you where all the cops hung out between Ruston and Shreveport though. LOL

Don't let it bother you when the girls call you old man though. I started back to school at LSUS when I was 33 and graduated Tech when I was 38. So I know all about it. LOL

LOL! Yeah, I read that part, but I know many electrical and mechanical engineers that went out and partied. Somehow they graduated, but it took them longer than most. haha.

The first time I attempted Tech was 96 through 97. It wasn't my bag, so I dropped out. I guess things happen for a reason, because I love being there now.

HAHA! Yeah, I try not to let it bother me. One good thing is that I look younger than I actually am, so I can still pull dates from some of those younger women. It's like the song by The Beastie Boys says, "College Girls Are Easy" :D

I think the hard part for me, is finding something I'm interested in doing, but something I can also get a job doing at the same time. I know alot of college grads, including my own brother, who have degrees, and aren't even working in the field they studied. That would suck pretty hard I think.

I know exactly what you mean. I am attempting my third major since I've been back in (journalism and psychology before settling on history). I eventually want to teach on the collegiate level, so I will have to go for a lot more than just a bachelor's degree. I'll probably be doing grad school at UNO.

History major? Bro, that was my major the last time I went back. I love history! I am more of an ancient history buff, like Egyptology, Greek, and Roman empires. Western Civ, was my favorite class. I still read alot about this stuff, in my spare time. I just didn't know of many job options with that major. Museum Curator maybe?

I have a friend that got his master's in history and is working that the Bob Dole Library at the University of Kansas. The irony of that is that he is a hardcore democrat. HAHA! I also know a lot of history majors that went on to law school. A buddy of mine is trying to talk me into doing the same thing, but I want no part of it. There are a number of options for people with a history degree that they aren't aware of.

Good story...couldn't help but notice that avatar. Could my post from the other day have anything to do with it?

I don't know, honestly. On a different note, though...considering how much advertising Peyton is involved in...I wonder if he ever considered having one of the major companies use his forehead for advertising space as he's giving one of those interviews?

j/k...you all know I'm a Manning lover...so...

HA! I guess I must have missed that post. Pretty fitting, though. I saw this pic online yesterday and couldn't pass it up.

Great story. I teach high school & it is well known throughout the school my love for the Saints. I have got grief for years - but this year has been different. There are only a few people at school who are rooting for the Dolts!!!
