How many years can we be on top?
The New Orleans Saints just won the Superbowl. We got there led by a Pro Bowler and future hall of fame QB.(arguably) The locker room chemistry is strong because of great leadership and character guys who have a team first mentality, while the athletes are very well coached on both sides of the ball. Payton who is a genius, also brought in Gregg Williams who made a tremendous impact on this defense. I wonder if Payton thinks that $250,000 was well spent? The scouting department has been spectacular at finding late round gems and bringing in undrafted rookies, also Mickey Loomis and the FO are very good at signing key Free Agents and resigning our core of valuable players. Tom Benson has turned into a very good owner since the decision not to go to San Antonio. I'm sure he is heavily influenced by Rita who is involved in the day to day operations.
When you build a house with a strong foundation it can withstand the test of time. The question is do we have the building blocks in place to stay on top? |

Re: How many years can we be on top?
too many free agents to keep this same team in tact.....but in another year we will have built another good team and we will have the pieces in place long term for a team that is ready to compete for years

Re: How many years can we be on top?
i think defintely, drew proves to be getting better every year and thats a testament to his work ethic. As you said the scouting department does an excellent job, the main thing we have to keep in mind is to not lose any vital contributors, i still think we should take a different approach wen it comes to the left defensive end spot. I do not believe that charles grant is the answer, we can get a late round defensive end, ogo for peppers, either way, we need the type of production that will smith did this year.

Maybe ... but many FA will want to play for SP and Breesus now ... As long as Breesus remains uninjured and maintains his level of play, we should be in the hunt for the next 5-6 years maybe?

Until she rolls ya over?
:^/ To repeat Super Bowl Championships is nearly as hard as getting to Mars without the help of NASA. They might as well let the past Champion from the year before change their uniforms so they have a target on the back for each season after the Super Bowl. |

I don't see any reason why we can't repeat. We finally figured out how to do it, why not go until we can't go anymore?? Or until the No Fun League gets tired of us winning.

Depends on whether the players think their careers are "defined" and can coast on rep or whether they think that they have the opportunity to be "hall of famers." Probably a mix of both. Hopefully its the marginal players who coast and the high potential guys who get motivated.

Re: How many years can we be on top?
I think we have a 3-4 year period that which we can remain one of the league's elite teams. It really all stand on Drew's ability to stay healthy. How sweet it would be if we could be this decade's New England Patriots? Like the Pats did for so long, we've drafted really well and have made the most of the players we have on the roster... which is a solid foundation for great things to come.

Re: How many years can we be on top?
I am glad the Saints won.I am a Saints fan from decades way before last Sunday, am a fan now, and will be years, decades from now.
Understand that before you read my post? How many years can the Saints be on top? With this coaching staff, Brees as a qb, and most of the same team, for another year or two, the Saints can be in the Playoffs. SB next year, 2011, probably not. Most teams do not get back to back these days in SB. AND YEAH, I do not think the Colts will be there either. Getting there is really tough. Getting through a 16 game season is tough. Right now, no one can say who will be in the Playoffs and SB . You have 32 teams, draft, free agents, firings of players and coaching staffs and coaches, the draft, and God forbid any injuries. This is about any team. The Saints for 2011, the free agents will most likely want to get the highest pay they can get. Do you stay with a SB team with a lower pay(R.Bush) or go to a low performing team that can pay millions? Football career is short. The people who can earn the big pay go for it. Do you want a name, make a record for yourself, or just go after money? There are a few FA on this team. Who is up for the Saints in the draft? What positions will they need to replace? You need older players around (Shockey) to show and guide younger ,new players. I think the Saints, with the current qb, coching staff, most or half of the current team members, a good draft which can be luck of draw, Saints in Playoffs 2011, 2012. The draft can be based on luck too. What happened to the wonderful ,big name,Matt Leinhart. AZ Cardinals fans could tell us an earful about that. Saints draftees over the years- Ricky Williams-bust! Drew Brees-,not a draftee for the Saints, not a big name floating around that turned out to be the little engine that could. |
