This makes sense on why we are letting Sharper test the waters
Why would the Saints hope that Darren Sharper gets a lucrative contract elsewhere?
It appears Saints safety Darren Sharper will hit free agency without being precluded by the $6.5 million safety franchise tag. Last offseason, 35-year-old Denver safety Brian Dawkins signed a five-year contract with $5.8 million in guaranteed money and an average per year of $3.4 million. Just like Dawkins, most people believe the 34-year-old Sharper has remained a productive player as he approaches his mid-thirties -- although Bill Barnwell disagrees -- so it would be reasonable for him to expect at a Dawkins-like contract. Not to mention, teams may be willing to pay a premium for Sharper because signing one of the stars of the Super Bowl champions is sure to ignite the fan base Read the rest FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Under the Cap: Pre-Combine Moves |

It could be that Loomis is hoping that some team signs Sharper to a bloated contract. The Saints could then sign another free agent. Or it could just be that the Saints want Sharper to see how much he is worth, and then sign him for that. They obviously do not believe that Sharper is worth $6.455 million (the amount a franchise tag would have required).
But here is something else to consider: probably 2-4 draft choices from the 2010 draft will make the team, as well as Chip Vaughn and Stanley Arnoux from last season's IR list. So lets say at least 4-6 roster spots in 2010 will be manned by new faces (it could be more than that). Obviously, that would mean 4-6 players who had spots during the 2009 season would be playing for other teams, or be out of football entirely. Sharper, at 35 years old, could be one of those players. All of this has to be considered. I would like to see Sharper back, but not if it would mean neglecting other needs, particularly in the front 7 on D. |

i think when sharper simply embarassed himself on the that 1 on 1 missed tackle in the super bowl was the writing on the wall for darren. he simply has lost a step in the fundementals itself and anyone can see he's not going to catch that 6 mil plus contract per year, 1.3 to 4 mil ?.

No doubt Sharper had a great year. He works well in Williams system. So question is what other team in NFL is going let him do what william let him do ???? Plus pay him the type of money he wants. He'll be back.

The Saints have a good plan either way.
It's like having a date with twins on the weekend. |

I know I haven't been around for a while....but to say Sharper has lost a step IMO is crazy. Wasn't he tied for the lead in INT's. How many did he return to the house? Lost a step???? Maybe a few baby steps but the guy is still a baller!
I don't think anyone that roots for the B&G was saying "Boy, he sure has lost a step" after every INT, pass defense, or INT for a TD. IMO, all the FO is doing is getting a legit price tag for him. Just kinda gets under my skin guys.... this guy (Sharper) is a reason we went to and won were able to win our first (Which many of never thought we would live to see) and win the Super Bowl. |
