Re: Jake Delhomme to spend weekend with New Orleans Saints

What we think about signing Jake is worth exactly what we been paid to express that opinion ... What is important and I trust that Coach Payton and FO will make a decision based on what is best for the team and all of our opinion's .... well!

Having said that ... I think we need to improve our situation at the #2 QB, Brunell has just run out of time, not a knock but just plain speak for where he / his ability to contribute to this team is at going forward. I think we need a QB who has started, won, can help Brees understand breakdown the other teams game plan and weakness, knows how to handle the speed and flow of the NFL game should he need to step in ... and most importantly understand and be comfortable being the #2QB.

Is Jake ready for that roll ... we'll see. No question he has had a bad run the last couple of years ... not defending Jake's results ... but injury, lack of offensive targets / 1 trick pony passing game, ultra conservative game planning and calling by Coach Fox and no doubt big time pressing on Jake's part as they played from behind almost every game ... are all contributing factors to Jake's terrible numbers the last 2 years.

Chase Daniels ... can't give an informed opinion on the guy's ability ... I've never seen him take a snap ... Brunell ... just too old and slow and I really do like Mark, but ... RETIRE ... PLEASE! ... We need someone who can play / has played at the Championship level should the unspeakable happen ... no one can replace Brees the way he's playing right now, but we need someone who can at least understand and execute Coach Payton's offense.

I will openly admit I am fan of Jake, watched him in High School every week, watched him at USL and with Saints ... always a fan and supporter ... see him several times a year around Lafayette during the off season ... a nicer STAND UP GUY you will not find ... If Coach Payton and FO say he's the man it would be a good thing on many levels ... IMOH :)

Delhomme is too dumb for the Saints offense and his arm is a noodle.

And his is a whining crybaby.

I would puke every time I saw him in a Saints uniform.

Brunell is very active on the sidelines and very involved. He is a great addition to the QB team while Jake would be sitting on the bench crying about how his milk was warm in his cereal.

Just say no.

We need a competent backup. Brunell is way beyond his "sell by date" - Even if it is not Delhomme - we need someone else at backup!!

I try to not even think about Brooks and Haslet too much.

It is like being in a nightmare while awake on purpose.
Thank goodness those days are gone.

Jake isn't as bad as people give him credit for. He has a winning record.

The cost for JakeD is a lot of money. NFL is a business, but this is kind of like a stab to Brees, you know. :bng:

How is signing a backup QB a stab at Brees?

Make no mistake about it, whoever we go with is going to be in the role of backup and is going to be paid backup money. If JD is not on board with either of those conditions then he disqualifies himself.

Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints

I like the Jake backup scenario if the price is right. He could actually come in the game and move the team if we needed him to. Brees could care less about who his #2 or #3 is. Its all about team success, PERIOD! This team needs a good backup if Brees goes down and Delomme would do a good job.

I am lost.

Fluite and whoever that other Qb that stunk in Buffalo was

Drew Bledsoe and some guy named Tom Brady

Fluite and was it Mr. Brees in San Diego?

Clevland

Giants (Warner and was it Eli?)

Arizona (Leinart and Warner)

Cowboys (Bledsoe and Johnson)

I think Vick, Steve Mcnair and McNabb also had this problem.

Any team that had 2 decent QB's a few years ago where a team was struggling got intense press coverage about which QB should be the starter and it put huge pressure on the coaches and the teams. It's part of the game, but it really flared up then.

So, Haslett stuck with AB and let Jake go to keep it at bay because we were pretty good and had won the 1st playoff game in Saints history.

If we sign Jake and we lose some games, the first person that says we should play Jake over Drew, "because I like him, he took the Panthers to the SB, and he's from here." is getting a noogie.

This is wrong. The backup quarterback plays a vital role in this offense and Brunell has done an exceptional job in that role. Delhomme is a dope and would be nothing more than a body in a uniform.

I much prefer a smart experienced backup able to see things for Drew when Drew is on the field rather than some fan favorite who everyone hopes never takes a snap and obviously has trouble reading a defense. Delhomme would be no help to Drew.

BTW...Haslett was scared to put Jake in when AB's shoulder was torn up because of the "fad" the press was having at the time with QB controversies. Delhomme would have done well, AB would be coming off surgery and Haslett would be in a tough spot. Delhomme would have likely become our starter the next season if we lost some early games, Drew Brees would not have come here and we would still not be World Champions.

I would say your first paragraph is just flat wrong. If Drew were to sprain his ankle and be out for 3 weeks, would Delhomme or Brunnell do a better job of keeping the ship afloat until Drew get's back. That's the only question we should be asking really. That and is Delhomme as good of a place kicking holder. If Drew is out for 4 weeks or more then we probably don't make the playoffs.

I agree. I meant season-ending injury. Drew almost blew out his knee in the Cardinals game when a D linemen fell into his knee. I'm pretty sure the Vikings would have destroyed us the next week if Jake or Mark were in there.

If Chase isn't the guy then I say bring in a young QB that has what it takes and work him up. I'd rather the team spend money on the D than Jake.

u guys arent confident with a former pro bowler and a promising rookie as our backups?

maybe i missed something but why would you guys rather have a guy like delhomme who doesnt know the system and is now known for throwing INTs as opposed to 2 guys who spent nearly the entire season with us last year?

Papa Voodoo 03-12-2010 04:18 PM

Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints

I'm concerned with him being left handed...I can live with Mark being "older." I'll have to wait to see Chase in PS since I haven't seen him make any throws. I have faith in Payton, but switching from the Cardinals game with Drew's timing and being right handed to Mark and being left handed in 1 week in the playoffs against the Vikes....I don't see that working out too well.

Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints

After reading about 6 pages of comments, I'd like to give some history.
Year 2002, 5th to last game, Saints comfortably ahead of opponent (was it Tampa?), then would go 3 and out and opponent would come down and score; Saints would go 3 and out and opponent would come down and score again; if it happened one more time Saints would lose; Jake was sent in and got the first down to save the game (pass to Joe Horn, hit hard, on ground, and snaked his hand ahead indicating first down). 4th to last game, Jake played most of second half and won that one. Final 3 games Jake sat the bench, Saints lost all 3, didn't make playoffs though loaded with talent except in coaching staff.
Year 2003, 1st game of season at Carolina: starting qb Rodney Peete was not injured, led Panthers to 38 total yards in first half and no first downs (maybe 1 first down); opponent received in second half; score 17-0 by the time Carolina got the ball; starter benched, Jake came in to lead a totally differently performing team; Carolina won 24-20 (I think) with a pass to Proehl with some seconds left.
Re noodle arm. Jake participated in 2 QB competitions in off-season. In first, his long pass was 65 yards; in second the following year, which he won, long pass was 73 yards and was the longest (I think) in that competition. His arm is supposed to be stronger after TJ surgery.

No, I'm not confident with Brunell as our backup. Dan Marino is a former pro bowler too but I wouldn't want him running the team either. It is a rarity for a QB to be as injury free and miss as few games as Drew has with us. After watching Brunell play for us I do not feel he could have lead us to a .500 record this past season should the worst have happened to Drew in week 1. He's a fine holder, but that's about it at this point in his career.

Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints

Thanks Pap Voodoo for explaining that for me.
I was trying to figure it out and it seemed the 2nd proved to be a real starter from your list there.

Saintsfan I agree.
You are only as good as your last year.
This is the BUSINESS of NFL and not a popularity contest.

Saint LB, sorry I offended you by saying Saint Archie Manning was what he was which was an average QB.
I like and respect Archie and Olivia Manning and their three sons.
I think they are of character in hopw they live their lives with some privacy and dignity . I did think it was awful when Eli pouted like a whiny baby and refused anything SD out in front inpublic in the draft. That was not classy. He should have smilied, put on the SD stuff while his dad, agents, lawyers worked behing the scenes to get him out of that.
AM was average.

SoI agree withb Joanie in that the Saints need a 2nd QB who wants to be here.

JD is here. Checking . Leaving no team unchecked as he looks for any other team. I predict the Saints are not buying him and that is fine.
Do you how many millions it would cost for 35 yr. old JD to be here?
He is not looking for a 6 figure pay, LOL!

JD, Good God No!! I htink we are posting over nothing because JD is not coming here. He was a 10 million or so pay and a starting position.
Burnell is too old.
JD will be too old and Drew is not going to be Saints QB forever. Two-three more years, who will the Saints have after Brees? Nobody.

Saints need a young , diamond -in-rough QB who they can mold and buy at a low cost. Saints scouts ,I predict , are looking for just that.
Find a Brees part 2.

The guy threw 8 touchdowns last year. He threw EIGHTEEN interceptions. EIGHTEEN. His rating for last year was 59.4. FIFTY-NINE-POINT-FOUR. In his last two seasons he has thrown 30 Interceptions. THIRTY INTERCEPTIONS.

Besides his local roots, can someone look at those numbers and kindly explain to me why we'd want him to do anything for the Saints? We might sign him as the waterboy, but the cheerleaders would intercept him and drink up all the gatoraid before he got to the players.

I understand what you are saying Saintfan, but many people see him as he once was and they love the feel good story of Breaux Bridge Boy just like we Booby Hebert( Bob-bay A-bear) and John Fourcade (John Fo-cade).
Both LA boys were ok at QB and were decent people from what I remember off the field.
Fan feel good and comfort does not make a good team of players.

Oh...I can do that, too. Watch here...

Drew Brees is an average QB. Doesn't make it true...but I can say anything I want...just as you can.

Archie was taller than Drew Brees, could run faster, could throw farther, could avoid sacks better...he just didn't ever play on a team with a fraction of the talent Drew plays with, or a coach with a fraction of the genius SP has.

I am not taking away from Drew, because he is great, and I'm sure there are things Drew is better at. However, to say a 2 time pro-bowler and conference MVP is average is knd of a stretch to me..

You might as well go ahead and say that Peyton and Eli are average, too. There is no doubt in my mind that Archie was every bit the athlete either of those two are. Actually, IMO, he was much better than either from a pure talent and athleticism standpoint.

OldMaid 03-13-2010 08:30 AM

re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints (Cleveland signs Jake)

Ok, whatever way you want to say what you want.
We do not agree.

You say AM was a great QB, but played on a sucky team, well then ,all of the Saints on AM's team were great players then, but just played on a sucky team.
I will use your logic.
So I say Bobby Hebert was an average QB and the offense was ok, but he played with a great defensive line?Huh?
Morten Anderson was not one of the leagues best kickers, but just had a great holder, great snaps.

AM, BH, JF, JD, Saints fans of LA lovelove the Louisiana boy or nearby state(MS) in the QB position if they can get him.
We have had this and have not gone far but it was a nice feeling of comfort.
After Brees, who will be N.O. QB? Who will be his second string QB now?
It could a St.Bernard dog to me if he could play,LOL!
It could be one from a small college far away. You could have a Black guy. Maybe a Hispanic American like Marc Sanchez.
Doesn't mater to means long as he can play.
Saints fans have been there from season 1-15 to seasons 8-8 and we really thought that was wonderful, and seasons 9-7,well, that was a winning season.
SB was a dream come true.
Next year, it may or may not happen.
The NFL, you could have in Playoffs as contenders Dallas, NY Jets, Steelers,Texans, who knows.
I just want this current team, who is left, and coaches atafff to stay up there.
I just want the Saints from here on, after this current team and current coaching staff leaves/retires, just to stay at 8-8 at least. I never want to see the Saints go back to the real sad years.
If they would, I would still be a Saints fan.

OldMaid 03-13-2010 08:35 AM

Ya'll so funny about JD's flight being intercepted, stuff.
I really he would be a bad choice and that this is not going to materalize anyway.
Not even close.
JD is just checking all teams to decide.
