Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
Scenario:
Drew slams his hand into a helmet in the first game of the season and bruises his pinky. Jake comes in for ONE play, throws a 5 yard slant and completes it for a first down. Drew comes back in on the next play and throws a bomb downfield to Devry who bobbles the pass allowing it to be intercepted. Sean doesn't pull Drew even though he continues to have a bad game by his standards. The following Monday, the media and Saints fandom are ripe with "Give Jake the Ball" freenzy and conspiracy theories about about how Sean won't give Jake a fair shot and that based on his 1-completion performance he should become the starter until (at least) Drew can once again use his pinky finger to pick his nose pain free. Oh GOD PLEASE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. :puke: |
Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
Saintfan...that is a scary, scary scenerio. The one thing you don't want is Brees looking over his shoulder. You always see quarterbacks go down hill fast when that happens.

Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
I am NOT a Brooks fan, let me make that perfectly clear. What I will say, is that he QB'd us
to our first winning season, with a play off win. He earned his starting position, when he did that. Now, after his second or third season of idiocy, YES, he should have been benched, but by then Jake was already gone. Anyone remember Brooks' back up? Todd Bouman? He was TERRIBLE. Brooks is gone, but at the time Haslett made the best decision for the team. The evil u know, is better than the evil u don't know. Haslett and AB are gone now. If they bring jake back so be it, but I just think we have more pressing signings, than the back up QB right now. |
Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
How did it not work out? Jake threw like 3 passes for us because Haslett was tied at the hip with SMILEY.
I for one think he's be a better option in a pinch than Brunell who is sure to being drawing social security soon. |

Blogs Home NFL Nation NFC East NFC North NFC South NFC West AFC East AFC North AFC South AFC West Delhomme to visit Saints -- again
March, 11, 2010 Mar 114:50PM ETEmail Print Share By Pat YasinskasTAMPA, Fla. – I’m on my way to see a New York Yankees spring training game (weather permitting) tonight. But I had to pull over to give you a little update on Jake Delhomme. Thanks to my great friend Johnny G. Lyon, who owns the Proud Lion Pub and Restaurant in North Tampa and also is a huge Bucs’ fan, for providing the wireless internet hookup. The former Carolina quarterback visited the Cleveland Browns on Thursday, but, as we’ve been saying all along, there remains a real possibility of him staying in the NFC South. There are reports Delhomme’s next visit will be to the New Orleans Saints. We’ve even heard from a reliable source in New Orleans that coach Sean Payton was heard publicly praising Delhomme earlier today. This one makes sense on a lot of levels. Payton tried to get Delhomme to Dallas when he was an assistant coach there. He also currently is in the market for a backup quarterback because Mark Brunell is a free agent or could be heading for retirement. Delhomme would be an upgrade over Brunell because he’s younger. He also would be a good extra pair of eyes for starter Drew Brees and is a good guy to have in the locker room. Then, there’s Delhomme’s history. He grew up in Louisiana and loves it there. He began his career with the Saints and was a fan favorite. That was back at a time when former coach Jim Haslett was obligated to “franchise’’ quarterback Aaron Brooks because of his draft status. Delhomme never had a shot to compete with Brooks. In the current climate, Delhomme also would be a backup because nobody’s going to take Brees’ job anytime soon. But Delhomme’s at a point in his life and his career where he can be content with that. Plus, he’d be back home. We’ll see what happens over the next few days. |

What????? Do you really think Drew needs to look over his shoulder no matter who his backup is? Come on. We need a good backup and he IS a good backup. |
Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
I would be more comfortable with Jake as our #2 than Brunell...who just played like #2.
|
Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
I agree. Drew Brees doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that does anything but look straight ahead. All you have to do is look back at how he handled Phillip Rivers. He basically made him wear a baseball cap for a couple of years. Rivers would still be holding that clipboard if Brees had never left.

It is my opinion that Brunell would have been worse. But given the choice between two plates of poo, I guess I would have to go with the fresher plate.

Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
And at least Jake has led a team to a Superbowl so maybe he has some distant memory of being a winner. Oh yeah and our weapons are light years better than Carolina's one trick pony.

Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
This wouldn't be a bad deal signing Jake. We are buying low since he's coming off a horrid year. He'd be an okay #2, but it would be exciting to see if Chase Daniel or a rookie QB can come in and beat him for the job.

Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
[QUOTE=saintfan;212751] They are a decent team that suffered through at least the last year and a half of some of the worst QB play ever by a 'starting' NFL QB. The stats back it up.
We are not aking him to start. We are asking him to come off the bench and take over while Brees is out. Do you really think Daniels or Brunell would be better? You MUST be a AB fan. |
Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
Jake needs a change of scenery.
I don't have a problem with him competing for a backup spot. Let's just hope he doesn't get flashbacks if he goes in... LACES OUT!!!!! http://cdn.bleacherreport.com/images...ofile_page.jpg |
Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
Needless to say it's pretty obvious that Brunell is not going to make it back on the roster. I think if the Saints sign Delhomme it would be the correct move. I am sure by working with Sean Payton he would be a very solid QB for the Saints. If not Delhomme, the Saints really need to find a new 2nd QB. I really like Brunell a lot, but it's pretty clear he is finished.

Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
It's this simple...no Drew = losing season. Manning has never had a worthy back up because evryone knows the Colts will do nothing without him. Same for us. Pass on Delhomme and bring in a young QB to develop.
BTW...Haslett was scared to put Jake in when AB's shoulder was torn up because of the "fad" the press was having at the time with QB controversies. Delhomme would have done well, AB would be coming off surgery and Haslett would be in a tough spot. Delhomme would have likely become our starter the next season if we lost some early games, Drew Brees would not have come here and we would still not be World Champions. |

Not really ... the whole world knew AB was hurt ... Jake could have come in for the last three games and made a difference. |

As for AB, I supported the guy, yes. I'm no hater. I also don't see where that has diddly poo to do with this discussion. |

Yeah, dat's da troof. That was a low point for me as a fan. I was definitely a disgruntled customer. It's an understatement to say that we had been through harder times, but it was frustrating to see our playoff hopes go down the drain because Haslett was too stuborn to do what everyone could see needed to be done. |
Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
Quote:
Jake had played well whenever he had an opportunity to get on the field. All of the evidence at that time screamed that he should have went in and played instead of putting an injured AB in the game. You can't say Haslett made a good decision way back then because Jake did not play well in 2009. |
Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints
Avoid Jake like the plague I say. While Brunell needs to go, Jake is not the answer.
|
Re: Jake Delhomme to Visit Saints

Jake failed to crack the starting lineup prior to AB, and post AB. He was cut by people not named Haslett. He didn't/doesn't have the tools, and it was an injury to the starting QB that got him on the field in Carolina. He did well for a while but the real Jake ultimately cost him his job and the Panthers a good 12 million. He's good on a 5 yard slant, but he panics in the pocket, throws lobs down the middle of the field when pressured, and generally tends to make poor decisions. That's not me being biased. Thats on his record for the world to see. |

Let me add, some Saints fans loved loved the idea of Jake Delhomme, Breaux Bridge boy. Cajun boy.LA boy. HE was at CP by then. Some Saints fans have selected memory. Some have imaginations. Bobby- they loved Bob-bay A-Bear from Cut Off, Louisiana boy. He was an average QB. He was from LA, but he was average. Arch, Miss'sippi boy...loved Arch. Archie Manning was an average QB. The Saints during the late 80's , I think, could have had Warren Moon, but nah, so Richard Todd was Saints QB. Oh boy! Richard Todd. Choosing Richard Todd over Warren Moon, figure that one out. Correct me if I am wrong about the timing here. Kenny "Snake" Stabler was past due when Bum brought him in. Now,Jake is free. I know, many Saints are so excited at the thought of having Jake, Cajun Breaux Brdige boy, LA native play in his backyard, but thinking realistically and thinking Playoff's and Saints future, this is not so good. It is a real feel good ,cute, story to have Jake Da-lome from Bro Bridg, Loosiana!!! Jake is an older QB at 35. JD is a first string QB still. Brees is 31 and is a strong QB and Saints first string QB. What will Jake do? Sit on the bench. The cost for JakeD is a lot of money. NFL is a business, but this is kind of like a stab to Brees, you know. Better would be get a young QB. Get one with potential. Get one for Saints future. Get one now at a lesser price and who can sit backand learn from Brees and Saints coaches. :bng: |

Jake Delhomme to spend weekend with New Orleans Saints
1 Attachment(s)
Jake Delhomme's career took off when he left the Louisiana nest for the first time in 2003, signing with the Carolina Panthers and immediately leading them to a Super Bowl berth.
Now, the New Orleans Saints want the free-agent quarterback to come back home. Delhomme, a Breaux Bridge native, former Louisiana-Lafayette star and former Saints backup will visit the Saints on Friday and Saturday to explore the idea of becoming an insurance policy for Super Bowl XLIV MVP Drew Brees. He'll be the second free agent to visit the Saints this year, following defensive end James Hall, who arrived Thursday. Hall, 32, is a New Orleans native who prepped at St. Augustine and has spent his 10-year career with the Detroit Lions and St. Louis Rams. Delhomme, 35, was released last week by the Panthers, who are moving on with young replacement Matt Moore. Carolina decided to wipe the remaining portion of Delhomme's sizable contract off the books even though the team still owes him more than $12 million in guaranteed money. Delhomme made his first visit to the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday and Thursday and could explore other options after his trip to New Orleans. It's not clear yet if he's set on competing for a starting job or willing to sign on as a backup. Jake Delhomme to spend weekend with New Orleans Saints | - NOLA.com |
