Trust in the moves the Saints do or don't make
Kelly McElroy Staff Writer . If you are one of the Saints fans who bought a No. 21 Mike Bell black and gold jersey last season (and I saw a few of them around the Superdome), you may want to start thinking about a new look for the 2010-11 season or about somehow turning it into a retro Dalton Hilliard jersey. On Wednesday the Saints officially said Bell won’t be back when they announced they would not match a contract offer to the fifth-year running back by the Philadelphia Eagles. That means Bell will play for the Eagles (his fourth team in five years) next season at a price of $1.7 million — a price the Saints felt was too much to pay. With so much money locked up in the running back spot already in Reggie Bush and the soon-to-be-paid Pierre Thomas, and with the emergence of third-year back Lynell Hamilton, Bell, who rushed for 654 yards on 172 carries and eight scores last season, was expendable. But the decision was probably based on more than just money. Bell’s action became more limited as the season wore on. He wasn’t known as the best pass blocker for Drew Brees and that’s a good way to not make it onto the field in the Saints pass-happy offense. Plus, Bell just seemed like he was in coach Sean Payton’s doghouse for the latter part of the season. With Bell leaving, the Saints still may make a play for a veteran running back (former Raiders running back Justin Fargas was in town last week) or they may look to a younger guy in the draft. Some people have asked about P.J. Hill and his whereabouts. You may remember him as the rookie running back out of Wisconsin who rushed for 128 yards on 26 carries and three touchdowns in the preseason for the Saints last season. 1 2 NEXT PAGE |

We won the Superbowl with the same personnel running the show.

Trust in the moves the Saints make or don't make?
I trust the moves the Saints coaches and personnel are making. It would have been good to keep that SB team for this year. You have to make room for your draft picks. You have FA and UFA.. There is a budget. There is age of players to consider. You have to find "workable" players that you can mold by Payton and coaches. I think the Saints are making the best decisions they can. |

When it comes right down to it...we have no otpion but to trust the moves. We don't have to agree with them but we have to have faith that they want to win as much as we do.

Re: Trust in the moves the Saints do or don't make
No doubt the Saints would love to have him heading into next season, but he was picked up by the Eagles last season when he was on the Saints practice squad and now he is with the Redskins.
Too bad. But when you are a good football team like the Saints, sometimes there is simply no room for good, young players on the active roster at certain positions and that was the case with Hill. Even if you’re a Saints fan who doesn’t agree with letting Bell go, or with any other moves the Saints do or don’t make during the rest of free agency or in the draft, you, me or anyone else are in no position to question what Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis or Payton do. Remember, your talking about the defending Super Bowl champions, and those two guys (along with Brees) are the main reasons why. Unlike former Saints personnel directors, these guys and their staffs actually know what they’re doing. Their moves have created a champion and now the Saints are a team that makes smart moves. So what if you have to buy a new jersey for next season? It’s a small price to pay for one Super Bowl title and possibly a shot at a few more. Re: Trust in the moves the Saints do or don't make
Theres no way we cant trust the moves they make. Honestly now that I think about it, since payton has been here we've made 3 mistakes that i can think of off the top of my head:
1) jason david.....just a flat out blunder that needs no explanation 2) drafting antonio pittman...i can kinda forgive this one cuz we ended up with pierre as an undrafted FA and it filled the mistake without giving up any more 3) cutting david jones....and im still not sure that thats even a mistake, but something at the time we probably shouldnt have done. anything else im forgetting? |
