Pro Football Weekly Mock--Saints Pick Pierre-Paul

2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida

Jason Pierre-Paul did not exactly come out of nowhere, but it sure seems that way to many who do not follow the Big East closely. Pierre-Paul was a very highly touted recruit coming out of high school, but he ended up at the junior college level. He spent his freshman campaign at College of the Canyons and then transferred to Fort Scott Community College before eventually ending up at South Florida. Needless to say Pierre-Paul was a dominating player at the junior college level. However, the domination continued at the FBS level. With a superb pass rusher in George Selvie at the other defensive end spot, Pierre-Paul got a lot of opportunities during his first season with the Bulls. Through 11 games he leads the team with 5.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles-for-loss. Some of that production may be due to the opposition worrying too much about Selvie, but Pierre-Paul is a great pass rusher in his own right.
At 6-6 and 260 pounds, Pierre-Paul is a monster of a defensive lineman. He has the size and the strength to battle with just about anybody at any level. Right now he could be a first round selection, but that is mostly based on potential and the NFL will definitely take him on potential.
1/24 Update: The debate still rages among draft gurus about George Selvie and South Florida teammate Jason Pierre-Paul. Selvie is obviously the more experienced option, but Pierre-Paul put up better numbers in 2009 and ended the campaign with 6.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles-for-loss. He is also expected to test out better at the NFL Combine. His lack of experience will be an issue for some, but if he does as well as expected in workouts leading up to the draft, he could sneak into the first round.
3/29 Update: Not surprisingly, Pierre-Paul tested out much better in all the workouts than his former teammate. So much so that comparisons between the two are a moot point. While Selvie will be lucky to be off the board by the fifth round, Pierre-Paul is eyeing the top spot among all defensive ends. He probably should not get it with Derrick Morgan and Everson Griffen moving up draft boards, but Pierre-Paul is a beast and a superb athlete. NFL teams will take that over experience any day.

Re: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida

Pat Yasinkas is doing a piece on him soon>

I’m going to be heading out to the University of South Florida’s pro day workouts in Tampa on Tuesday.

Obviously, the big name there will be defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. He’s projected as a first-round pick and some say he could go in the top 10. I’ll be doing an extensive column on Pierre-Paul as we get closer to the draft.

But I’m also going to be keeping a close eye on Nate Allen, because one NFC South personnel executive told me to keep an eye on Allen. The executive, who didn’t want to be named, said his team really likes Allen. Most projections out there have Allen as a second-round pick, but a strong workout could put him even closer to the first round.

Re: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida

i keep hearing hes a freak athlete and i keep seeing his backflips

i keep hearing about how hes a stud pass rusher......even heard comparisons to jevon kearse

the negatives seem to be his ability to stop the run which wont be a problem if we get a big DT to play next to him

i think getting pierre-paul would be wishful thinking because i think he'll be the first DE taken
