NFL to reposition Umpire(Partially)
NFL readjusts umpire positioning for Thursday night's games | NOLA.com
The NFL will move umpires back to their old spots during the final five minutes of Thursday's preseason games. Darron Cummings/The Associated PressIndianapolis Colts Peyton Manning complained to the league after he twice was penalized for 'illegal snaps,' meaning he snapped the ball before the umpire was aligned behind the running back. Previously they were in the old spot for only the final two minutes of each half. Share NFL spokesman Corry Rush confirmed the adjustment Wednesday. League officials decided to move umpires from the old spot, in the middle of the defense, to behind the deepest running back for safety reasons. But Peyton Manning complained about the switch after being called twice for illegal snaps when the umpire couldn't get into position quickly enough last week at Green Bay. The NFL will again re-evaluate the new policy after this week's preseason finales. The change could become permanent when the regular season starts. |

I was thinking about one thing that has been part of the discussion, how does the QB know that the ump is far back enough. Since the QB can get playcalls straight to his helmet from the sidelines, could there not be an official sending a beep or what not to the QBs helmet? I mean if there was a whistle signal that could be confusing for the players.

Not much difference .... 5 minutes instead of 2 minutes ...
Maybe they can start running a bunch of double reverse and keep the tradition of running into the ump! | |
