Chase Daniel wins New Orleans Saints backup quarterback job

Since arriving in New Orleans last year, Chase Daniel was the New Orleans Saints' on-again/off-again third-team quarterback.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Chase Daniel beat out veteran Patrick Ramsey for the roster spot behind Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees.
During that time, the Saints' coaching staff apparently has been impressed by the progress Daniel has made in Coach Sean Payton's complex offense -- so pleased that they released veteran backup Patrick Ramsey on Friday, Ramsey's agent confirmed.

Although the Saints said they won't release the 22 roster moves they made until Saturday, sources and various reports had the Saints ridding themselves of several notable players -- defensive end Bobby McCray, defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy, running back Ladell Betts, center Nick Leckey and safety Chip Vaughn.
The Saints have to trim their roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players by 3 p.m. Saturday.
Among the bubble players who apparently survived the cutdown are undrafted rookie free agents Junior Galette, a defensive end, and running back Chris Ivory, both of whom starred in training camp and preseason games.
Also among the players said to have made the team are receiver Adrian Arrington, running back DeShawn Wynn and safety Usama Young.
In deciding to go with Daniel, 23, instead of Ramsey, 31, the Saints picked a younger player with more upside. Ramsey and Daniel played to a near statistical draw during the preseason. They had nearly identical passer ratings -- Daniel 89.7, Ramsey 89.1.
Daniel completed 31 of 48 passes (64.6 percent) for 369 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Ramsey was 28-of-45 (62.2 percent) for 400 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
The staff didn't appear to be favoring one over the other for the No. 2 spot behind Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees.
But it was obvious by their decision, the Saints are enamored with Daniel's potential.
Meanwhile, Galette was ecstatic when he found out he had beaten the odds and made the roster. Galette said he found out in a meeting Friday afternoon.
"This is probably the biggest accomplishment of my life, " Galette said. "I can't even begin to put into words how much this means to me and my family, and how excited we are to reaching the next step to the next goal."
