Mike Detiller - Who will fall into the trap?
I have heard and read about it all week long that the New Orleans Saints are walking into a “Trap” game.
Yes, the Saints play the San Francisco 49ers sandwiched between an emotional season-opener victory over the Minnesota Vikings and the Week 3 game against arch-rival and divisional foe Atlanta Falcons. It also is Monday Night Football on the road against a desperate football team. All that is correct, but just who will the trap be set for. While the Saints are playing with a big bullseye on their backs, are the 49ers the one team that will put a knockout shot on the Saints? I don’t buy it. Virtually everyone had the 49ers pegged as the favorites to win the NFC West. Much of this speculation was based on the fact that the Arizona Cardinals were entering the 2010 season without quarterback Kurt Warner. The 49ers were 8-8 last season, but much of their success was within their division where they went 5-1. They also finished 4-2 to close out the 2009 season. San Francisco, where the West Coast offense was born under head coach Bill Walsh and quarterback Joe Montana, turned into a power running attack under current head coach Mike Singletary. Running back Frank Gore has rushed for more than 1,000 yards for a franchise record fourth consecutive season. The 49ers return a potential big-play threat in wide receiver Michael Crabtree and one of the best tight ends in Vernon Davis. Davis, who was in Singletary’s doghouse for his attitude, developed into one of the best pass catching threats catching 78 passes for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. This guy is a tremendous football player. read more | |

I'll give San Francisco credit they do have some weapons on offense. But I don't think that they will put up the kind of numbers that it would take to beat the Saints. Unfortunately for Singletary I don't expect him to make it through the season. His team is about to implode and when it does I expect the fans to be all over him like vultures on a dead carcass. It's sad really. I respected him as a player just not so much as a head coach.
