Friday Discussion: How The Falcons Stop Drew Brees
We all like to criticize Drew Brees around here.
Why wouldn't you? He's the quarterback for the hated Saints, for one thing. The media treats him like he was reborn with the humility and grace of Gandhi and Mother Teresa, except twice as scrappy. There's also the fact that he happens to be good while doing both of the things I've already mentioned, which has the hatedar beeping loudly. Still, just because we don't like the guy doesn't mean the Falcons don't need to be ready for him. It's going to take effective game planning from Brian Van Gorder and great performances from the entire defense to rattle Brees, throw him off his game and perhaps make him throw a couple picks. Don't be fooled by talk of a running game: The Falcons will win this game on defense by shutting down Small McLargeheart. Stopping Pierre Thomas is necessary and good, but stopping Brees immediately grinds the Saints to a halt. Their defense is not good enough for shut down the Falcons for four quarters. You know me. I love a good discussion. So rather than me tell you what I think we need to do—though I will say constant pressure would help a lot—you tell me what you think we have to do.
