Sadly, if you could point to one play, that would be it. Sucks it came down to that. Hartley has the potential to be a good kicker.

It does suck, and I agree he does have potential. There's nothing we can do about it now. The game is over. We just need to focus on how we're going to beat Carolina next week.

Only one question left to ask....

WHAT WOULD BREESUS DO?

Some of you are the most whiney, throw the baby out with the bathwater disloyal, crybaby couch potato douchebag whiner fans on the planet. Some of you sound like LSU fans.

Please move to Atlanta and become a dirty bird fan because you SUCK as a Saints fan. You're stripped of your Who Dat Republic citizen status.

I'll leave it to you to decide if you're on the list of whiney beotchfans or not. The following responses will determine that.

Should he have made the kicks? sure. No reason to whine. The season is young.

Try to be a better fan... You remind me of Viqueen fans, some of you.

I would agree with you %100 if this was the only one. He nearly lost the Minnesota game with a shank, he lost the game last night with a 27 yard shank, we lost to Tampa last year due to a missed 37 yarder...

He is at %57.1 for this season! And none of these misses are long field goals. He is missing chip shots.

To the people who want o keep him. How many more do you need?

NOLA54 09-27-2010 11:24 AM

I am not making excuses for Hartley. Who held for him last season? Was is Brunnel? Still the entire thing doesn't rest on his shoulders. We had a chance to win in regulation. That was yesterday and we need to look forward. There is no reason to panic.

Safe? Only because I do not call the shots.

Do you like having a burn in your gut for EVERY field goal? I do not. I had the same feeling with Gramattica.

I agree with danno. We were moving the ball. There D was tired, don't stop pounding them 'til your in the end zone. If you don't make to the end zone and it's 4th down, then kick. This was a hard fought game. And the dirty birds came to play. But we won't underestimate them next time. You can believe dat.

Again...hindsight is 20/20. I agree with Payton's call. Here is a list of things that could've happened if we continued to pound it.

fumble
pick
sack
penalties
player injured and out for season
touchdown
kick on 3rd or 4th down and face the same odds for success

When you kick from that range...it is either good, and we win...or they get the ball from the 20 and the game goes on.

One other thing to consider. I'm pretty sure that a majority of coaches would have made the same call as Payton. If you decide against kicking it when it's a chipshot ...then you could be sending a message to your kicker. It could turn a slight mechanics problem into a huge head-case. I really do think that this entered into Payton's thought process.

fumble (could also happen on kick)

pick (I doubt Brees would force one at that stage of the game))

sack (not a huge diff in 27 and 34 yard FG either)

penalties (could also happen on kick)

player injured and out for season (could also happen on kick or at practice)

touchdown (likely, the way we were driving)

kick on 3rd or 4th down and face the same odds for success
(which is why I'd rather give Brees 3 tries to win instead of zero).

I wonder if Morten is available...

High percentage chance of a good kick....he did what he should have. He showed confidence in his young kicker which should have helped Hartley. Hartley failed to do his job. Are there any better kickers available? Probably not plus you risk Hartley being picked up by someone else...developing his craft a little more and then facing him again for many years.

Because it was 1st down and he missed two this season already.

I'll take 3 shots with Brees and then a shot from Hartley over ZERO shots with Brees and one shot from a struggling kicker.

cablebandit 09-28-2010 12:58 PM

Brees and company may have been more banged up than anyone realized. Also, any Saints fans know their TD percentage when in the red zone? Its easy to do something different in hindsight but had he made the kick, i really doubt anyone would have been questioning the call.

I questioned it before he kicked, and so did several others I spoke with.

RaginCajun83 09-28-2010 02:41 PM

What I don't get is that Drew had drove them down the field and then Payton dives into the Carl Smith playbook .... at least try to score on first and second down and then kick the FG, oh well time to move on, learn and hang a 40 burger on the Panthers

Lifer 09-28-2010 03:34 PM

Maybe it's the holder....why not change things up and give Chase Daniels a go at holding for kicks? Would also add a threat on fakes...Just saying...

I did too, if for no other reason than we may have to do it in the playoffs. My step dad and I were completely shocked to see them trot out the Field Goal team there. We were moving the ball. Their D was giving in. Grow a pair and put the damn ball in the end zone so I can go back to eating left over ribs.

SaintPauly 09-28-2010 05:15 PM

IMO, the team as a whole looks off. I was banging my head on the bar, trying to figure out if that was Brees out there, or if he had been possessed by the spirit of number 2. Some of those throws were just a mystery to me. The defense couldn't tackle, and were letting Mylanta move the ball at will. The game came down to Hartley, and yes he screwed the pooch on that one, but I just think as a team, they all stunk it up equally.
