A little divine intervention

Since Sister Mary Tarcisius delivered blessed medals to the Saints, they've won two straight

The Saints have won two consecutive games, and Sister Mary Tarcisius doesn't think it's a coincidence.

She believes there's more at work for her favorite team than just better blocking and tackling.

A nun for more than 31 years, Sister Mary knows a thing or two about faith. After all, she's been a devoted Saints fan for nearly as long.

From Our Advertiser

Like all missions, hers began with a crisis: The Saints' 55-21 loss to Indianapolis on Sept. 28, a day Sister Mary calls "Black Sunday." The loss was the third in the first four games for the Saints.

"When I heard the score, I thought, Oh my goodness, they are going to need celestial help," said Sister Mary, 47. "I figured I needed to call on the highest angel to help."

By coincidence -- or maybe not -- the next day was Sept. 29, which commemorates The Feast of the Archangels. Sister Mary bought five medals of Saint Michael, the leader of the Archangels. The back of each medal was inscribed with "Please help me rise up to any challenge."

She picked Saint Michael because he "is all powerful against evil." Michael the archangel, revered as the defender of the Catholic Church, has long served as the patron saint of police officers and paratroopers.

Sister Mary had the medals blessed by a priest and delivered them to the Saints' offices in Metairie, one each for Owner Tom Benson, Coach Jim Haslett, wide receiver Joe Horn and quarterback Aaron Brooks.
