Willie Whitehead to be named NFC defensive Player of the week

Saints defensive end Willie Whitehead gave it his all this past Sunday, and now the NFL is recognizing his effort.

According to Saints spokesman Greg Bensel, Whitehead will be named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week Wednesday by the League office.

The five-year pro had a career-high three sacks, a forced fumble and a pass defensed, to go along with five tackles.

After the game, Whitehead actually had to be hospitalized for dehydration after temperatures in Tampa reached the high 80s at game time.

Great job and well deserved. I love this for several reasons. It honors an athlete who played a great game and after it came out the extent of the effort Willie put forth it makes the honor even more deserving. It helps motivate a defense struggling to find an identity. Seeing one of there own put forth such an effort and seeing the result both on the field with a win and off with such recognition inspires and brings pride to all. Whitehead is the perfect kind player to have around to show Sullivan what is expected.
