As far as Saints coaches and players are concerned, the Superdome's new playing surface is a field of dreams

Wednesday November 12, 2003

Staff writer

Saints coach Jim Haslett compared the old AstroTurf playing surface at the Superdome to a used indoor-outdoor carpet.

The surface was usable, but it was hardly ideal for blocking and tackling.

When Haslett strolled onto the Dome's new AstroPlay field for the first time Tuesday, he finally felt like he was walking on a real gridiron in the Superdome.

"It looks like a football field when you walk in there now," Haslett said.

And most important, it feels like one.

The finishing touches of paint were placed on the brand-new AstroPlay surface in the Louisiana Superdome on Thursday. The Saints\' fleur-de-lis logo was painted at midfield while the Saints word mark in black, trimmed in gold, was placed in each end zone.

The paint job was the final part of the AstroPlay installation which began shortly after the Saints-Panthers game on Oct. 26. Gone are the old-style Saints helmet from the midfield area and the all-black end zones. The current paint job will allow for easier removal after each game so that logos for the other football events held in the Superdome can be placed on the field.

The Saints will play their final four regular season games on the new field starting with Sunday\'s game vs. Atlanta (Noon CT; FOX, Saints Radio Network).

It looks odd, but very cool to me. I guess I\'m too used to the old paint.

They said that they can\'t have the endzones black because it needs to be easy to change to another color(team, superbowl, high school championship, Cotton Bowl). So I guess we gonna look a little plain like the Dolphins, Packers, Giants, etc. Guess the change is good though. By the way, check out the pic showing the difference between the new stuff and the old stuff! I see why they were begging for a new surface.

A large fleur de lis will be painted at midfield, replacing the Saints helmet that served as the centerpiece for the past seven seasons. The end zones will have \"SAINTS\" painted in black and gold letters. The background in the end zones will remain green; officials want to use as little paint as possible because it tends to make the grass fibers harder and slicker.
The current paint job will allow for easier removal after each game so that logos for the other football events held in the Superdome can be placed on the field
