this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Although our secondary is amazing. Dude there is nothing like that Dome Patrol. They were the best hands down. Even in the league all time. Don't know if I can say that for our backfeild....

How can you compare The Dome Patrol of old to any defense of this day an age?
This is a total different game to what it used to be. Today we have more pass oriented offenses and the penalties are getting outrageous, can't even look at a QB twice without getting some kind of flag and/or fine... And Ed Reed is a FS not a SS |

Ed is a FS and Troy gets burned frequently, he just makes up for it with a freakishly athletic play. He gambles a lot, but it usually pays off. The dome patrol era Saints were outscored 123-46 in their 4 playoff losses. |

If the Dome Patrol even just heard a rumor that a touchdown might be happening in the building, they'd scramble, roll up in their jumpsuits and jeep outside the Dome, and STOP that TD from happening, right there on the ramps if necessary. They were so intimidating, that just being in the same building with them on Sundays, caused Bobby Hebert to be afraid to score, even though they were on the same team. Even Tulane could barely do much on offense in Saturday night games, just knowing that those guys would be there on the same field 12 hours later. Airlines would re-route their flights from flying over the Saints' training facility, to avoid having their planes batted down. Sam Mills once denied an opposing running back a TD, while not even IN the Dome, just by talking him out of it, negotiating remotely via speaker phone. Even some veteran quarterbacks in the Hall of Fame, have found their numbers of career touchdowns have mysteriously gone down, since the Dome Patrol exhibit was put in the glass case next to theirs. They were that good.
On the other hand....Put it this way.... after yesterday, Leigh Torrence is not gonna be on any posters on any kids' bedroom walls any time soon, that's for sure. |
