Saints Secondary = Dome Patrol?
Our Secondary is the key to the Saints winning.
Are Sharper, Jenkins, Harper, Greer, Porter, Robertson equal to Johnson, Mills, Swilling, Jackson? Are they better? Best Saints Secondary Ever! In my 45 years of watching the Saints, we've never ever been close to having a shut down secondary. It's always been "OH CRAP" as another big play costs us another game. It might be fair to say that getting rid of one player in the secondary (Jason David) put us in the Superbowl. The great thing about the secondary (that Payton and Williams have built) is that it makes it almost impossible to play catch up with the Saints once we build a lead. It forces teams to run the football which can kill any come back attempt. Ever wonder why the Saints are a 4th quarter team? I think it's by design. In the past the Saints were always beat by the pass in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter. It always seemed that 2 minutes was an eternity. The prevent defense struck fear in to the hearts of Saints fans everywhere. Our secondary sucked and always costs us the game. This fact isn't lost on the current coaching staff. I think Williams knows that in this league you win by stopping the pass first and forcing the other team to run the football. This eliminates 4th quarter melt downs which we haven't seen since Williams got here. Make Teams One Dementionable. Williams wants you make you run the football late in games. He knows like so many Saints fans that games are lost in the 4th quarter by the passing game. It goes without saying that in order to have a shut down secondary, you need to have a good pass rush. Having both makes you a great defense and a great second half team. In the second half Williams lets the team play run defense on the way to the QB. This leads to turnovers and makes it very difficult for teams to come back in the 4th quarter. Great Secondary Leads to More Possessions. Ever notice at the end of the first half that the Saints always seem to squeeze in one more possession. When you have a shut down secondary, incompletions by the other team STOP THE CLOCK. I've seen quite a few games where we stop the other team and go down to score with seconds left in the 1st half. Payton and Williams are great at this. One more possession could easily be the difference in the game. Actually... the Secondary may Prove to be Better. In any case, the Dome Patrol was great and I'm not trying to take anything away from them. Still, we didn't win a SB with them. I actually think that a shut down secondary better if you have the DL to go with it. Any arguments for the Dome Patrol? History Agrees With Me. FF http://www.ceilingcat.com/img/ceiling_cat_football.jpg |
Call 'em the "Dime Patrol"

I agree that this definitely the BEST secondary we've ever had. But I tend to think that GW would prefer the other teams to pass than run at the end of the game. Why? 2 reasons:
1) the other team is behind, and they need to throw in order to catch up 2) our D plays best when they can pin their ears back, take risks and go after the QB If a team is running late in the ballgame, usually it's because they're running down the clock. |

Look at our offense... it's built for the 4th quarter too. Great QB, very good WRs, very good OL... very good TE... very good RBs... Well on offense, we're just the stuff.... |
I'd like our current secondary with the front 7 of the Dome Patrol. That's just sick nasty.
|
if you say dome patrol, i'm sorry but you're ignoring the facts that the secondary brought us a bowl in their real first year together...THEY'RE AMAZING.

I really don't think it matters since the Dome Patrol was the #1 defense in the league. The difference was an average offense. I'd take Brees over the Dome Patrol. The Dome Foam Patrol http://www.kimberanna.com/wp-content..._100205_mn.jpg |
The current offense with the Dome Patrol defense would have won multiple Superbowls. I like our current defense but it is "bend but don't break". The Dome Patrol defense was "don't bend or break".

Dome Patrol - 0 playoff victories
Current Secondary - Superbowl Just sayin' |

Now that you mention it, I'd like to have these DB's with our Dome Patrol LBs--- but I love Vilma. And Danny Clark is sure holding up too. fun stuff. |

Both teams are good in their respective eras.
The original Dome Patrol was all the Saints had back in the day. If we would have had the solid offense we have now, who knows how many SB titles we would have. Today's secondary is amazing. Again, give partial credit to Drew Brees and our current offense for making this team so successful. If I had to choose, I'd pick our current secondary because they won a SB with it. |
Back in the Dome Patrol era the Saints actually did have enough offense to win championships. The problem was they were rarely ever turned loose, and thus when it came to big time games, like playoffs, they could never handle it. That era is one of the most frustrating for me as a Saints fan. How does a team with an excellent defense, and weapons on offense like Bobby Hebert, Dalton Hillard, Eric Martin, etc... never win in the post season? Beyond me, oh wait, CARL SMITH... My goodness...

I like "NO FLY ZONE".
Dome patrol was really based on our LB's. |

I couldn't decide how to vote. Then I saw highlights of Sam Mills on NFLN last night.

I just want to slit my wrists whenever Dome Patrol is even thought of to rename or compare the current defense.

Although our secondary is amazing. Dude there is nothing like that Dome Patrol. They were the best hands down. Even in the league all time.
Don't know if I can say that for our backfeild. |

How can you compare The Dome Patrol of old to any defense of this day an age?
This is a total different game to what it used to be. Today we have more pass oriented offenses and the penalties are getting outrageous, can't even look at a QB twice without getting some kind of flag and/or fine... And Ed Reed is a FS not a SS |
Quote:
Ed is a FS and Troy gets burned frequently, he just makes up for it with a freakishly athletic play. He gambles a lot, but it usually pays off. The dome patrol era Saints were outscored 123-46 in their 4 playoff losses. |

How about the Dome Posse.

After this game... Dome Patrol wins.:mrgreen:

changed my vote to dome patrol.

If the Dome Patrol even just heard a rumor that a touchdown might be happening in the building, they'd scramble, roll up in their jumpsuits and jeep outside the Dome, and STOP that TD from happening, right there on the ramps if necessary. They were so intimidating, that just being in the same building with them on Sundays, caused Bobby Hebert to be afraid to score, even though they were on the same team. Even Tulane could barely do much on offense in Saturday night games, just knowing that those guys would be there on the same field 12 hours later. Airlines would re-route their flights from flying over the Saints' training facility, to avoid having their planes batted down. Sam Mills once denied an opposing running back a TD, while not even IN the Dome, just by talking him out of it, negotiating remotely via speaker phone. Even some veteran quarterbacks in the Hall of Fame, have found their numbers of career touchdowns have mysteriously gone down, since the Dome Patrol exhibit was put in the glass case next to theirs. They were that good.
On the other hand....Put it this way.... after yesterday, Leigh Torrence is not gonna be on any posters on any kids' bedroom walls any time soon, that's for sure. |
If the Dome Patrol were on the Mexican border, illegal immigration would abruptly stop.
Drug cartels, on their best day would have to settle for a long FG. |
Dome Patrol and its not even close

Dome Patrol with our current secondary....

SAINTS SECONDARY = DOME PATROL 2.0
|
Not a fan of these types of comparison but I'd say our current secondary (when healthy) has made more game changing plays when it was absolutely needed.
I remember the Dome Patrol. They were vicious, tough, and put many a QB on their back. Fun to watch but like anyone else, I like the W's anyway, anyhow. I will say though, the 49ers cheating cap mess really screwed over the Dome Patrol era. Without the 9ers being stacked with talent I seriously think the Saints would have gone deep in the playoffs with first round bye. |
