More Pictures of the Parade Fox 8 Sports Though it’s still too early to arrive at a precise attendance figure for Tuesday night’s New Orleans Saints Super Bowl XLIV victory parade, (see photos ) the event’s overseer assured that “it was more people than we ever had downtown.” Barry Kern, president of Blaine Kern Studios, estimated that crowds were “as deep as 40 people” at major intersections of the 3.7-mile route. As he rode past the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in the 900 block of Canal Street, Kern saw the crowd stretch from the street “to the parking garage,” he said. “I’ve been doing this (a long time), and I’ve never seen that many people,” Kern said. “It was unbelievable.” At least one local radio report Wednesday morning said “parade organizers” pegged the crowd size at 800,000 people. Kern did not doubt that figure but stopped short of confirming it because his company needs to see footage shot by helicopters flying over the route before getting an idea of precisely how deep the crowds were. Organizers’ final estimate may be larger or smaller after judging the photographs, Kern said. If the 800,000-person attendance figure holds up, it would dwarf last year’s parade toasting the Pittsburgh Steelers, winners of Super Bowl XLIII. Media reports there estimated that 350,000 people attended the celebration for the team’s sixth Super Bowl championship. More than 250 Saints players, coaches and staff members threw beads from signature floats from the following New Orleans and Jefferson Parish krewes: Endymion, Bacchus, Rex, Zulu, Alla, Caesar, Tucks, Muses, Orpheus and Babylon parades. Traffic along major highways leading into downtown was backed up to Jefferson Parish. City streets were impassable. Lines to cross the Mississippi River on the Algiers ferry were at least an hour long. Outlying areas seemed empty. Once the parade kicked off, the massive crowd braved temperatures cold enough for New Orleans officials to enact the city’s freeze plan. |

Living in the area I was there for the party. It was nuts.
In many ways... it was as good as the game. |
