If the young guns on the team can't beat him out, that means the coaching staff has done a pi#@ poor job of talent evaluation and signed a bunch of guys who couldn't outplay out a slow, aging player. This depresses me.

Or maybe it means the coaches (who have recently won a Super Bowl and fielded a top -10 defense, by the way) know just a tiny bit more about Shanle than you or anybody else on this forum.

The hate this guy gets is mind-boggling. I don't love him by any stretch but I almost hope he keeps his starting job just so I can watch half the people on this board lose their minds.

And I hope the Saints improve as a team every year and win the SB. Part of improving as a team is getting better through the draft and free agency. It's not hate to want your favorite team to improve itself by getting a more talented player at any position.

And yes, I'm sure the coaches know a bit more about Shanle than I do. But despite your condescending statement, believe it or not, they get it wrong sometimes...like trading up to draft Antonio Pittman in 2009.

That top 10 defense you are so proud of was ranked 16th in yards allowed per game. 13 teams were worse than the Saints (16 better) at yards per carry allowed. In the Seattle playoff game, they allowed a 6.3 YPC average and 150 yards total.

So go ahead and let your mind be boggled by the "hate" you see for Shanle here. I would rather have seen the team go a different direction than to rely on a returning 9 year vet to make an impact.

Speaking of condescension....

BTW, the Saints had the fourth overall defense last year. Not the 16th.

But hey, since you're such a defensive expert as compared to say, Gregg Williams, I'll take your judgement over his.

Saints reach agreement with LB Scott Shanle on a two-year, $4 million deal.

IMHO, $2mm too much.

Actually they were 16th in rushing yards allowed per game, just like SAINT_MICHAEL said

Actually, that's not what he said.....Even if he had said that (which he didnt) being 16th in rushing allowed is not exactly terrible and certainly not a condemnation of one individual player on an 11-man unit. It's pure stupidity to scapegoat Shanle for any shortcomings the Saints defense may have.

No, in the rushing stats I was posting about they were not fourth:

From NFL.com - Official Site of the National Football League for the 2010 season the saints gave up 112.3 YPG. That is 16th, not 4th. Fourth was San Diego at 93.8 YPG
