As am I. We signed him to a 3-year contract with a pretty good sized signing bonus. That doesn't look like a camp body signing. He's got good 3-tech skills so he may be Ellis' primary back-up before its all said and done.

FinSaint 08-08-2011 07:50 AM

I'm looking at it also from the standpoint of the season after this. With both Franklin and Rogers

signed to 1-year contracts and for under market value - even though I don't think Franklin's contract

numbers have been disclosed - it would seem like if they'll have good to great seasons they'll have

many suitors next off-season and the Saints might be too to close to the cap limit to sign them. Therefore,

Johnson could be somebody who steps up to become a starter on next years team. I mean he's

only 26 like Ellis and if the general opinion is that Sedrick is still developing, I don't see

any reason to doubt that Johnson could do it also. Having Rogers and Franklin show how to

be a dominant DL could be just what he needs to refine his technique and training regime in order

to become that dominant young DT for years to come.

But at this point it's all wishful thinking and therefore I'm so starved for any information on

how he is performing at the camp.

Hey fin Saint ..i can call into WWL today and ask about him...oh wait..we can out find more info here...lol..

Yeah I hear you. I rarely ever check out their reports... mainly when one is pointed out on this forum.

And don't even get me started on the CBS national NFL coverage. :-(

FinSaint 08-08-2011 11:52 AM

According to Jeff Duncan's depth chart report Tom Johnson "could" make the roster and he stated

that Johnson has been "playing well" in the camp with the 2nd team, and could provide the needed

depth at the 3-tech position behind Ellis.

- Still think Six (6) Cornerbacks is a little much
- Some of the Defensive Ends can move inside to relieve Ellis/aid pass rush
- Arrington isn't making the team from the tub is getting louder
- Charles Brown may join Rookie Greg Romeus on the PUP list
- After Will Smith Suspension, may see a roster shift to give depth in another position
- Have better competition/depth at linebacker; but is it enough?
- Matt Tennant can also play guard - like Strief, versatility is good

jeanpierre 08-10-2011 06:23 AM

I think FinSaint was asking about Tom Johnson; he looks solid candidate to make squad as there isn't a whole lotta 3-tech tackles on the squad; but his play has been solid, he's a little older - so there's maturity; and he has a favorable contract...

strato 08-10-2011 06:26 AM

That is almost exactly what I have (at this point). But I have Oliver making it over Amaya and I only have 5 CB's.

Well done.

Disregard. Just saw the last page with the 'complete' roster.

Don't apologize Fin.
Everyone has their "sleeper" favorites.

You should have been around here a few years back to read the predictions about this guy:For N.F.L. Draft, the Biggest (XXXXXXL) Sleeper - New York Times

Walter Thomas- OMG! He can do a forward flip!

Not apologizing... just surprised that my cover was blown. :-)

The true sleeper is in fact Don Johnson... I have a feeling that they're going to revive Miami Vice just like they did with Knight Rider. So,

it'll probably be like Miami Vice 2000 or something similarly riveting. And once again Don Johnson is going to be on the lips of everyone...

since he is naturally going play the leading role as Crockett... and the real hook is that the show is still gonna take place in the '80's

even though the name might make you think otherwise. Oh, and Michael Mann is definitely gonna direct it.

By the way... David Caruso clearly stole his "sunglass move."

darstep 08-10-2011 11:21 AM

I'm just hoping that some new faces can step up and make a difference, make some plays, stir up the mix and rejuvenate some vets to play at a high level. I'm kind of hoping for some new names in the news. We can't even try to be the 09' team or last years team; we've got to get better. Sometimes that means new blood. It's our time! AGAIN!

- Was the emphasis to Roby and Humphrey in the offense a staff need for evaluation? or were the coaches doing these vets a solid of getting them exposure as their release is a forgone conculsion?

- Just how serious is the Johnny Patrick injury? Injuries at cornerback are a serious issue even more so now...

- Offense definitely had its rust; not a good test in the 49ers

- Williams ignores NFL Gentlemen's agreement and blitzes crazy

- Morgan shows the greater Saints Nation what the buzz has been all about. Now, does Adrian Arrington answer the bell?

- At Defensive Tackle, Tom Johnson looks like he could be a solid NFL pro; Mitch King will not go quietly away and shows some fire...

- Nate Bussey has the talent to play at the NFL level; Casillas is a smart, instictive player with poor injury history and size for OLB...

- Aside from the salary cap savings, that move will be sure to cool down the Hot Tub...

- That's alot of turnover on the offensive line...

- Does Charles Brown step up at Left Tackle or become the Tackle-eligible or make the team???

- I take back my too many cornerbacks comment from last week...

- New Rule: You can never have too man cornerbacks...

Good list, I think its going to be very close to the final.

alexonfyre 08-16-2011 10:40 AM

I would have a hard time believing that they keep Turk McBride and Clint Ingram over depth players on the O-line, unless they seriously step it up in the next couple pre-season games. To be fair, I don't know who on the O-line they would keep, but only two back-ups (with one being a career center) for 5 positions in one of the linchpin parts of the offense...that is playing with fire.

This is a great point; either we have some special free agents/rookies in camp or we now have a concern of greater importance...

Pat Yasinskas of ESPN who writes the NFC South blog (also one of the better reporters/writers for ESPN, I know, not saying much) pointed out how our salary structure for Oline is different than any other in the league...

- We have the best guards in the league and we can't score in goal line drills???

- Good Depth and versatility at linebackers...

- Are the new Offensive Tackles going to be good enough or stand out?!?

- Charles Brown, are you going to step up at Left Tackle???

- Starting Cornerbacks getting healthy, now how does the depth look???

- Defensive Line looks to be a force - real test this week at Houston...

This is why Guards aren't paid as much as tackles, because even the best guards are trumped by very good D-Linemen, Tackles on the otherhand CAN shut down DEs and LBs.

Tell that to Hutchinson and Faneca on their hay-day... they just dominated the D-Lines and Hutch still does, but only very rarely.

Who would you have start instead of him? Probably not Foster... do you think Nicks could slide into tackle and make Tennant take up guard duties like was suggested in another thread?

Let the man compete before you pass judgement. If he is the best player, then he should be starting, if not, he won't. He had the misfortune of being behind the Saints longest tenured player, and a pro-bowler to boot, and he still contributed well as a 6th blocker/TE. He probably isn't dominant like Stinch was back in the day, but I don't recall him ever being embarassed by anyone.

And if Brown is finally able to stay healthy and start progressing in his development... Strief might not have a long window of opportunity to show that he can be a starter for the team.

It might be that he's a starter for this season and is either replaced by Brown on the O-Line or with a new FA acquisition during next off-season.

He had 2 or 3 false starts Friday night against second and third stringers. I will let him compete we have know choice. I want to see what he's going to do against this 3-4 defense that the Texans run. This should be intersting

Hahaha, he picked that move up from Stinch! All kidding aside, that's the type of mental error that camp and preseason is meant to fix. Now, if he is still jumping off in week 3 and 4 of the preseason, then I will be worried.

While it's preseason, Saints and SaintNation has to be a little disappointed in the poor play (mis-tackles, poor blocking, decision making)...

But you have to wonder who's going to make the team...

The rookie defensive tackle King had a poor mistackle in his gap assingment...

Arrington didn't seem to be all-out on a goal line punt coverage play...

Free Agent Oliver seemed lost in space and on open-field tackles...

Henderson forgot his presence of mind...

Casillas who'd look so good in Week 1 looked lost at times in Week 2...

Will Herring - wow, did he catch the bus?

Will Smith started serving his suspension early?

Jabari Greer did his best impersonation of the Last Airbender...

Well cuts are coming, soon...:dunce:

- Tackling, Tackling, Tackling

- Injuries and poor performances in Houston exposed our supposed depth

- Do we have Offensive Tackles we need to run and pass protect?!?

- The Houston game really made the depth chart cloudy at best

jeanpierre 08-23-2011 06:56 PM

For now, twenty-four on offense (24), twenty-six on defense (26), and three (3) kicking battery...

I can't see four (4) Tight Ends...

Turk McBride would be the most difficult cut in the above scenario...

Roby is there for now as a punting game gunner; jury's still out...

The poor play in Houston really has things very messy right now...

The only way that would be plausible is without a FB in the roster, but Hall was signed for a reason and has performed well so far.

Excellent Point.

Now, I'm not so sure the Saints don't keep another defensive lineman; but the injuries are going to affect the decision making on cuts this season...

Were we getting too much information in New Orleans?

Seems like things have gotten real quiet...
