- Injuries playing a big role in who makes this team

- Can Arrington pull a rabbit out of his?!?

- Linebacker is the big mystery on defense

- Darren Sharper to resign?!? Does he still have plenty in the tank?!?

- Mitch King to outlast Tom Johnson for the backup to Sedrick Ellis

- Is Matt Tennant and Charlie Brown our new Bushrod and Strief? Where's the depth?

- Back to injuries, Late in the season, players that may be on the PUP list will need to come off that list and cuts will be made then...

- This season will be a game of who's left standing...

I (surprisingly) disagree with you on this one. The injury doesn't seem to be that serious, and both SP and GW have been high on TJ and how he has competed and performed.

I firmly believe that TJ is more in the way of what GW wants out of a DT, especially from a 3-tech. I think that King might be undersized for that position in the NFL - even though he has looked good against the backups - and, therefore, it would be intriguing to see him try out as DE or, even better, as a LB like he did at times in College... or was it high school?!

Without injury, I agree that Johnson look to be the better candidate than King...

But injuries are going to dictate who makes this team more so than in any other year...

TJ will be healthy come season start... I hope! http://yoursmiles.org/msmile/pozitive/m1213.gif

Furthermore, the Saints have invested significantly more money in him, so the FO has a "hidden" motivation to see him start.

Yep, we outbid several teams that wanted him. If Mitch King makes this team, it'll be as our 5th DT.

I think he could also be a DE in some packages. We may not keep a lot of LB's since the majority of ours are simply journeymen anyway. We may opt to keep an extra DE/DT over a 6th/7th LB. Dunbar/Herring/Ingram can play all 3 spots.

Who could also play DE King or Johnson?

Come to think of it both could slide outside in certain packages (like our 3-4 or the 3-3-5). They have good quickness. Both are kinda short but their burst looks good.

strato 08-28-2011 10:26 PM

Dont count out Swanson Miller

King has some technique issues, but his motor is undeniable...

Johnson seems like a solid defensive tackle...

After tonight, I'm thinking five (5) defensive ends and five (5) defensive tackles...

Martez Wilson, should he mature could be your inside linebacker with Vilma's coverage skills put outside at SLB...

Shanle and Casillas can't seem to establish whose the starter...

jeanpierre 08-28-2011 10:32 PM

If there was any doubt Joique Bell just sewed up his roster spot with that radio interview he just gave...

I'm leaning toward 10 D-linemen too but that's gonna leave LB or safety a lil thin.

I like Martez to stay outside. Dunbar looks like a solid back-up to Vilma and Wilson blitzing off the edge looks lethal. It looks like its starting to click for him.

We're gonna cut some good players.

That hasn't happened often under these circumstances (respected, proven people making tough decisions) in the history of this franchise...

Arrington is the most frustrating of the cuts; if he'd bring the effort every play and toughen up...damn

I hope J.P..Miller looked good out there...he is big and fast

Danno 08-29-2011 09:12 AM

I thought Miller looked slow off the snap. He has good accelleration, but not much burst off the line. At least thats the way it looked to me.

So 5 DTs: Rogers, Ellis, Franklin, Johnson, King and Miller - that's 6 DTs, so one will be cut out of Johnson, King and Miller. Or maybe try to get King into the PS, but there's a danger of some other team snatching him up. I still don't see Johnson being cut because of the monetary investment in him and with what he showed before he got injured... clearly the best out of those 3!

Johnson is taller than Ellis and King is about as tall, while Ellis is beefier than both of them, but that can fixed without genetic manipulation.

He did look slow off the snap but I think that confused the OL because they didn't block him. Don't know if that was by design or he just doesn't get a good jump.

jeanpierre 08-29-2011 06:40 PM

A few surprises:

- Adrian Arrington, would you buy my lottery ticket?

- Only two (2) Tight Ends; wow, really?

- Conversely, kept two (2) Fullbacks; commitment to running game?

- Ramon Humber definitely has that special teams edge; good for him.

- Saints' small school love goes out to Fordham's Isa Abdul Quddus

- So when Hartley gets healthy, then Ivory, is there a kickoff for kicker?

- And who goes when Smith gets out the penalty box?

- Got to have a de la Puente shirt at the B&G Store on Vets, right?

- the de la Puente shirt can go with my Guido Merkins old school jersey...

Sorry Danno, I'm in the camp that Harper is a liability in pass coverage no matter how many game balls he gets from "GW"...

The occasional blitz-sacks or strips are great; but a strong safety needs to be able to provide the basic required skills - solid coverage and enforcement hitting...

All positions should be looked at for improvement...

Now, I knew putting it first would spark debate; I like a healthy discussion...

Truthfully, by far Offensive Tackle and Outside Linebacker are most in need of upgrade - especially with an injury at either position creating a precipitous situation for the team; a team that is very capable of another championship...

I've seen enough of Harper's game to know that we could do better and that he was seriously overpaid in guranteed money the past offseason...

Now, I've been very critical of Will Smith in the past and he's finally elevated his game to be commensurate to his contract; as a Saint fan, I expect Harper to do the same or find his immediate replacement...

strato 09-04-2011 09:29 AM

This team isnt as deep as a lot think..the O- Line and Safety are concerns..as far as depth...I would bring in Meriweather for depth..as soon as possible..JMO

Danno 09-04-2011 09:33 AM

As far as "priority" goes, replacing a pro-bowl safety in the 1st year of a 4 year contract is not exactly a priority.

These are the positions that I'd consider a priority...
DT - Yes (Rogers and Franklin are free agents next year)
WLB - Yes (but hopefully Casillas is the answer)
SLB - Yes (but hopefully Wilson is the answer)
LT - Yes
RT - Yes
PK - Yes
DE - Maybe (Will Smith isn't getting any younger)

But...
SS - No
FS - No
CB - No
MLB - No
QB - No
WR - No
OC - No
OG - No
TE - No
FB - No
P - Hell No

jeanpierre 09-04-2011 11:04 AM

As I said Offensive Tackle and Linebacker are the two biggest "needs" on this team...

While Bushrod and Streif look to be capable professional football players - their play or positions could use improvement...

I think all the Linebacker positions should be closely scrutinized; with the exception of Dunbar, who's not a full-time player, we don't have anyone in the corps whose hits make opposing teams "hear the footsteps"

On the issue of Defensive End and Will Smith's age, I'd agree; we don't know that Cam Jordan can produce nor what we have in Greg Romeus, but I like the picks made...

And I don't buy into Loomis Cool-aid; personnel mistakes have been made and I'm not comfortable with Harper's past coverage play for another four years; that's why Strong Safety as all positions should be scouted...

papz 09-04-2011 11:28 AM

You should buy into the Loomis Cool-aid. 3 playoff appearances, a Superbowl ring, and a NFL executive of the Year award. Clearly he's doing something right. Just because our strong safeties strong suit isn't in coverage, doesn't make Loomis an idiot(I think you've said that before if I remember correctly). If GM's had to hang their hat on the SS being excellent coverage guys, the majority of them would be out of a job.

jcp026 09-04-2011 11:41 AM

We're getting ready for the 2012 draft already? Gotta go with a tackle in the second round...no doubt.

Agreed, except that Roman Harper helped shut down some of the best TE's in football this past season.

He covers as well as most NFL SS's.

IIRC, a stunt involves two players crossing over, thats not what Miller did. It simply looked like he was a bit slow off the snap.

a stunt can also be a delayed move into a rush lane so as to confuse offensive linemen in their reads...

that isn't to say that Miller wasn't slow - only God, GW, the MLB, & the defenders on the field knew the call...

Not buying it. It wasn't that huge of a delay to be intentional. He needs work on burst. He has excellent acceleration, but looks slow off the snap. That was no delay.
