If Pro Bowl players can indeed find redemption through a preseason opener, then that's what New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith and safety Roman Harper did in Friday night's 24-3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Smith and Harper were the two most active players in the early stages of New Orleans' assault on 49ers quarterback Alex Smith.

The Saints' Smith flattened the 49ers' Smith on the third play, coming around the right end on third-and-7 to force an incomplete pass. Harper scooped up the ball and ran into the end zone just in case it was ruled a fumble, causing a premature celebration in the Superdome.

Smith manhandled that poor man yesterday night. While he was doing it, all I thought about was how depressing it's going to be not having him in our lineup at the beginning of the year.

Too much on the starters too little on how the game changed the fortunes of the guys vying for a roster spot.

When is the first cut? Gotta be soon...

I think the new CBA eliminated the various cut downs. I think there may only be one or two now.
