If I were a kicker these days and kicking a 63 yard field goal, I'd go ahead and back it up another yard for the hell of it. Who wants to share a record with 2 or 3 other douchebag kickers? |

BUT... didn't Dempsey have a block of wood on the end of his foot? I could be worng - but I was pretty sure I read this... Wood has got to give a little extra "omph" to any kick. |

This however did generate controversy about whether such a shoe gave a player an unfair advantage. Thus proving that people will complain about ANYTHING. Exaggerations are known to happen in sports I suppose a flat short shoe could look like a block of wood. When asked if he thought it was unfair, he said, "Unfair eh? How 'bout you try kickin' a 63 yard field goal to win it with 2 seconds left an' yer wearin' a square shoe, oh, yeah and no toes either". The NFL added the "Tom Dempsey Rule" in 1977. "Any shoe that is worn by a player with an artificial limb on his kicking leg must have a kicking surface that conforms to that of a normal kicking shoe." I think anyone who complains should hack their own toes off and then try kicking with a square toe and see if it goes further. |
