Raider's Sebastian Janikowski ties Tom Dempsey's 63 yd FG tonight on MNF

The Raider's Sebastian Janikowski tied the Saint's Tom Dempsey for the longest field goal in NFL history tonight on Monday Night Football with a 63 yard boot. The record is shared by three kickers now since it was also tied by Denver's Jason Elam a few years ago. The ESPN broadcast crew must have had a premonition he might try a long one. They showed a tape of Janikowski hitting a 70 yarder in pregame warmups just before he came on the field to hit the record kick.

I think Janikowski is the guy most likely to break the record. 63yds is a looong looong kick.

I think what makes the Dempsey kick so great, is that it was to win the game.

Put an asterik by the other 2 kicks. Both of them in Denver with the lighter air not the heavy humid air of being below sea level.

Then there's the fact that the other 2 have a whole foot....

If I were a kicker these days and kicking a 63 yard field goal, I'd go ahead and back it up another yard for the hell of it. Who wants to share a record with 2 or 3 other douchebag kickers?

Please do not get me wrong - Dempsy's kick is one of the things that drew me to the Saints when I was just a kid.

BUT... didn't Dempsey have a block of wood on the end of his foot? I could be worng - but I was pretty sure I read this...

Wood has got to give a little extra "omph" to any kick.

Tom Dempsey was born without toes on his right foot. He wore a modified shoe with a flattened and enlarged toe surface. (sorry, no block of wood)

This however did generate controversy about whether such a shoe gave a player an unfair advantage.

Thus proving that people will complain about ANYTHING.

Exaggerations are known to happen in sports I suppose a flat short shoe could look like a block of wood.

When asked if he thought it was unfair, he said, "Unfair eh? How 'bout you try kickin' a 63 yard field goal to win it with 2 seconds left an' yer wearin' a square shoe, oh, yeah and no toes either".

The NFL added the "Tom Dempsey Rule" in 1977.

"Any shoe that is worn by a player with an artificial limb on his kicking leg must have a kicking surface that conforms to that of a normal kicking shoe."

I think anyone who complains should hack their own toes off and then try kicking with a square toe and see if it goes further.

In high school we had a special kicking shoe which had a squared toe. Not the easiest thing to wear and kick with. I was better barefoot. So I don't believe his squared off shoe gave him any advantage.

It's funny because there is controvery with all three kicks. 2 in mile high, and one with a modified shoe. The science was already done on the modified shoe and the verdict was it had no effect on the kick. There is a video on here somewhere about it so yes, an asterick should be put next to the mile high kicks.

I just wish I could have been a fly on the wall when the State Trooper and Demsey, and whoever else was drinking beer hooting with othe owls celebrating. That was the story he gave to HBO.
