Pretty cool. If it had to be named something, I'm glad it's being named for a great car company. Plus, might be some cool Mercedes fan promotions like they do here in Dallas with the American Airlines Center.

If we absolutely had to have the naming rights sold then I wanted to have an American brand I could be proud of. Something like The Harley Super Dome. If we can't have an American sponsor then I am happy that Mercedez is known for quality. It will always be the Super Dome to me.

Well that explains why Finland won!

I hope you'll recover and have an awesome season next year!

I'm all for supporting local/national businesses, but would you really prefer f.e. Walmart Superdome to MB Superdome just because one is an American business, but with very shady practices?

Saintswrath 10-04-2011 01:21 PM

For anyone that hate this name or the idea...

Remember this?:

Guess what brand of car this is our coach is carrying that Lombardi Trophy through his roof in?

1 clue, they just put their name on the Superdome.

Nope! American products just don't have quality built in anymore. You make a good point.

They are made in China...and are killing us...

Mercedes Manufacturing Plant in Alabama, USA

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Mercedes manufacturing facility where the M-Class, the R-Class, and the GL-Class are built.

Everything is under one roof… from Body, Paint, and Assembly shops to Administration and Shipping. This unity helps to emphasize the importance of teamwork and to foster team member communication and facilitate the consistent, incomparable quality inherent in the assembly of all Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

homerj07 10-04-2011 07:44 PM

Foreign Company. Well at least it isn't the Chinese - they already own the governments debt!!

pumpkindriver 10-05-2011 12:11 AM

To FinSaint, I can't quote your reply as its too damned long but I have lived in Germany. And while they may have some leagues and 3 divisions of American Football there, the general population of Germany doesn't give a rats furry rear end about American Football. And if anybody is spewing hate and ignorance its you. You're the one resorting to classless name calling tactics, not me. Go crawl back under from the rock from which you came.

No doubt. They build a great car and in some ways its better that they build them in Alabama than elsewhere, but all profits still go back to Germany.

Saints Special Edition Mercedes Benz to follow?

Will there be a Saints Special Edition Mercedes Benz?

It would be decked out in black and gold...

Black leather interior...

Black exterior with gold chrome accent...

low profile tires with extra large black rims with gold trim...

Fleur de Lis on the hood and Gold Grill...

When nearing high water during May Floods, hydraulics would raise it from lo-rida to hi-water position...

Sounding the horn would be "Saints Come Marching In" melody...

Joe Horn would even blush!:bng:

Since Alabama is basically Saints Country..
I think we can bank on a Fleur De Lis Series coming out of the Alabama Manufacturing plant.. I bet the people there are ecstatic about the naming rights.

Budsdrinker 10-05-2011 07:27 AM

Why does it matter where the company is from with naming rights? The point is the naming rights puts money back in the state of Louisiana and it benefits the Saints and citizens of Louisiana. That's all that should matter. And by the way, there are very few American owned companies left any more that can afford to pay for naming rights. All the big brewery companies that have naming rights are now foreign own and if you dig deep enough I'll bet the finanical companies are made up of foreign investors as well.

Choupique 10-05-2011 07:30 AM

It could have been a much worse sponsor. How do ya say two dat in germanic?

Choupique 10-05-2011 07:31 AM

fwiw, The Saints are America's Team, not the Cowgirls. Just sayin.

Saint_LB 10-05-2011 08:34 AM

I think it is no coinkydink that the Benson's settled on a company that makes cars. It is a classy car and no way they would have put their name on that building 30 years ago. It goes a long way in pointing out just how much Benson, Loomis, Payton, and Brees have done to change the image of our beloved Saints.

OK, so I'm not trying to start a fight with you and if I hurt your feelings... then I apologize for that. I will admit that maybe I overreacted to your comment, but I guess it just struck a nerve as I have heard that from so many peoples mouths. Furthermore, I've had to defend this particular game and it's fans far too many times on this side of the pond against very similar statements as you made.

But, for my rebuttal to the statement above, I would still argue that your initial statement below is incorrect and it came across as somewhat xenophobic even if that was not your intention.

A country by definition is made up by its citizens (or nation as they are sometimes referred to as), its borders, and the culture, customs, aspirations and laws they share amongst themselves making up what is often called a nation-state. If - as in this case I'd argue for - even some parts of the population holds dear some concept or activity, it would be incorrect to make a blanket statement as you did stating that the country as a whole doesn't know or care about a certain thing. That was my point, but whether I made it comprehensibly enough in my earlier reply can certainly be argued.

But, if you still don't believe me that football has a dedicated and growing following in Germany, I would advice you to read through the following article. Even though its two years old, it still gives you a better perspective on the matter, and more importantly from someone else than me. As a direct quote from the article I think the following serves as a fairly good argument against your statements.

Quote:

American football will never come close to challenging soccer's dominance in Europe. But the Adler and their fans, along with others across the continent, make up a thriving subculture that has embraced the American game. In Germany alone there are hundreds of teams, thousands of players and tens of thousands of fans who closely follow the German Football League. To some, these numbers -- minuscule compared to soccer -- represent the future of the sport. For the NFL, winning over Europe and turning football into a truly global game has been a tantalizing but elusive prospect.

Lastly, I don't think that I'm guilty of "name calling" as you stated, and I still stand by my opinion that what you stated was ignorant while maybe not meant as malevolent. All I ask is for you to have an open mind towards the commitment of players and fans of this game outside of the borders of North America.

So? They are Hiring American Workers, Investing in the city and state the factory is built in. They in turn can reinvest any profit in possibly opening another Factory elsewhere. At least they are providing Jobs in this country that other people are exporting out. Lighten up.

breesfan27 10-05-2011 01:52 PM

It will always be the Louisiana Superdome to me. I won't call it the M-B Dome...nope, no way.

SaintPauly 10-05-2011 09:30 PM

Ok, once again, I brought this subject up a few years back, and everyone jumped on me with both feet. I will look for the thread, but I'm pretty sure that I predicted this would happen eventually. Either way, it's no big deal. Times change, names change, things change.... Such is life.

Pete 10-06-2011 12:31 AM

If this move helps in a new contract agreement keeping the Saints in "The Big Easy" after the current contract expires,I have no problem with whoever they wanna sell naming rights to. On another note,I'm with the majority here being that I'll never be able to call THE DOME anything but,THE DOME!

It definately could've been a hell of alot worst!:bng:
