Saints happy they stuck with DT Johnson
METAIRIE, La. – For the first week of training camp, Tom Johnson found himself working with the first-team defense, finding a way into the rotation despite first-round pick Sedrick Ellis and free-agent pickups Shaun Rogers and Aubrayo Franklin being in the fold.
And in the first preseason game against San Francisco, especially in the first half, he stood out with quick movement and an athletic style of play not seen often in a 6-foot-3, 288-pound defensive tackle. Only, he strained his left calf late in the game. Then he missed seven weeks, including the opening four games of the season, and folks began to wonder why he was kept around to take a roster spot up. “A lot of you were kind of wondering are you going to continue to stick with you,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “I think we saw enough early on and felt strongly enough early on to be patient.” Full article.
