It is no secret now

I love FootballOutsiders. And not because they confirm my knowledge and insight.

The New Orleans Saints have scored the most points in the NFL this year, but their offense failed to score until the fourth quarter on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. The Rams exploited a couple of mismatches and dismantled a key element of the Saints' attack, while also exposing a gaping weakness on the New Orleans defense.
The Saints will probably overcome this loss and win the NFC South, but the flaws shown against St. Louis may cost them a trip to Indianapolis in February.

The Rams continually pressured Drew Brees and didn't have to blitz much to do it. St. Louis finished with six sacks and nine other quarterback hits. Defensive ends Chris Long and Robert Quinn and tackle Fred Robbins combined for five sacks and seven hits.

Now New Orleans has to prove that this game was the exception and not the norm.

Teams with dominant defensive lines can cause trouble for anyone... not just particularly the Saints.

In another thread it was pointed out that we shut down the two of the best DE's in the league against the Colts... we can get the job done. Consistency is what it's all about.

Did Charles Brown start in the Colts game, or was it Strief? I don't remember, but Chris Long abused Brown

There are times when one players strengths and abilities line up perfectly with the opponents weaknesses and/or trouble spots. Over the course of a 16-20 week season, somewhere along the line, a player may meet his match and get whipped like a stubborn mule. It happens! But it shouldn't happen every other week. When it does, changes need to be made: upgrades if at all possible. We have shown that we have the talent to beat any team in the league and we've also shown that we can stink it up with the best of 'em. Payton/Williams has to get these guys ready to play EVERY week. If the results are not there, then we need to get some new pieces in place. This weekly up and down will end like it did in Seattle.
Papz said it - consistency. A consistent HIGH level of play on both sides of the ball. Nothing less will do.

There didn't seem to be any adjustment during the game to help the tackles either. Just appeared our sideline was asleep for most of the game. Not the norm for us. If the team is truly as pissed about their performance as we have read, Tampa is in trouble.

Shouldn't be happening when you have the two BEST GUARDS IN FOOTBALL. Just saying.

The rush was coming from the outside which is the tackle's job not the guards. But on a couple plays I saw, miscommunication between Graham and Brown was the problem. Graham was chipping the DE to the inside and Brown was setting up to block to the outside which gave the DE a clear run to the inside. Both guys have to know what each other is doing for it to work.
