the problem with our D is 3 fold.

1. We need DE's that get to the QB.
2. OLB who can cover and get after the QB.
3. DL who cans stop the run.

Fault GW for the debacle of the D, its his scheme and failing to coach up the players on fundamentals. As a coach you have to be a good teacher and a game planner. All he does is dial up blitzes. Hell my 90 year old grandmother can do that. Develop those damn rookies... coach them up. I don't see much of that going on. We play to be lucky on D.

But guys, I didn't see them run all over us today. Running is their "thing" and we executed enough to win.

When the game was on the line, the D-line WON the game.

I don't think the D played bad except for the final drive in the fourth quarter. And Ofcourse we frickin blitzed every time and left the middle of the field open. Our defense held the Clowns to three field goals in the red zone! I'm not gonna ***** about that!

I mean, I feel the same. Look, they bent most of the day but were very good in the red zone until the last part of the 4th. When the chips were down, we executed.

BUT THE PREVENT DEFENSE MUST GO! THIS THREAD SHOULD BE ABOUT THE BANNING OF THE PREVENT DEFENSE IN GENERAL FROM GREGG WILLIAMS PLAYBOOK!

If the front 4 or 3 [scheme depending] could get pressure, Gregg wouldn't have to blitz as much to try and get to the quarterback.

That would eliminate both problems, keeping the LBs in coverage and hurry the QB forcing bad decisions when we are in the prevent...

But at the same time if the D-Line would be getting pressure, he would still blitz because our sack numbers would be way up...

ALL OF IT! They got 55 yards on 2 plays. It was like nobody was covering their wide out on 2 exactly plays in a row in the middle.

I HATE THE PREVENT! Prevent D will prevent you from actually winning the game!!

The push the D-line had when they stuffed Turner on that last play is what I would like to see more from them. They were 2-3 yards deep in the Atlanta backfield forcing Turner to try to make a cut at 4 yards deep. What has ben killing us in the Run-D is the cutback when the whole D overpursuits.

My observations of the defense and it really doesn't mean much because we as fans don't know what the defensive schemes are supposed to be but anyway here goes. Our DB's play with too much cushion. The birds had a 3rd and 7 on one play and Porter was 8 yds off the line, quick slant and the birds make a first down. And how do you leave the same receiver uncovered 3 plays in a row. Our DE's don't contain the edges, they crash in and most teams see this on tape and bounce their runs to the outside around the DE's with great success. DL's and LB's stay engaged with their blockers too long, now this is where I'm not sure of the scheme if they are supposed to stay engaged for someone else to make the tackle but after watching Patrick Willis with the 49ers yesterday he rarely engages with the OL, he comes to the line then goes straight to the ball without getting tangled up with blockers. Watch Vilma and he will come into the line and engage with whatever blocker comes his way. We either are not all on the same page when it comes to the defensive scheme or we just lack technique. I never played higher than high school ball but we were taught to always shed our blockers and get to the ball and I just don't see our guys doing that and I'm not sure if that's the scheme or just lack of talent.
